I am starting to think that I have no business trying to decorate cakes. I look at some of the photos posted here, and the cakes just look perfect! They look even, the icing is so smooth and decorations are just incredible! Not my cakes.

I just did one tonight for our school's fall festival. At first, I was happy with it and took a photo. But, once I took a good look at the picture, I could instantly see all of the flaws.

I am just feeling very discouraged tonight.

It looks good to me. I bet when you look at it after a good night's sleep, it'll look good to you, too. (And it will look better to you in person than in a picture, too. Unless you are a really good photographer with a really good camera, pictures usually just don't do justice to cakes.)

We're all our own biggest critics.

Cake decorators are our own worst enemy....we see all our flaws, but the general public will see a delightful creation. You did a good job.

I think your cake looks great! One thing that I ove about this site is that there are decorators from all calibers on here, so please don't feel like you aren't good. I think you are! icon_smile.gif But like me, there are others that have probably been doing it longer and are a little better than us too. icon_smile.gif I've been pleased with how smooth my cakes are starting to get, and each of my cakes is better than the one before. icon_smile.gif

I agree with PP...we ARE our own worst critics. I've learned to stop pointing out my flaws. NO ONE ever sees them (or at least doesn't say anything) and when I don't cast doubt on my talent, people just rave over them.

Keep at it! You're doing great and will only continue to learn more as you become more seasoned! icon_smile.gif

(sorry for all the icon_smile.gif...I'm additcted to them and ALWAYS type them!)

You are not the only one that feels like that!!
I did a cake last night and I don't feel happy with it at all.
Also feel, should I put it on the site, won't they laugh at what I have done....
I go over and over the photos, not knowing which one to post....
then I pluck up the courage and just put it on and wait for the comments.
Be strong!! your cake doesn't look that bad. I have seen worse here on this site. thumbs_up.gif

Aww, the ol' "I can see every flaw in my cake" conundrum. Yep girlfriend, that's actually a good sign, believe it or not.
Now you know what to look for and now you can learn or know next time how to fix it.
Ya'll can't fix something if ya don't know it's broke.
Yer gettin better!! Chin up!!!!
And like the other posters said, yep we all go through that. I bet even bronwyn or duff go through it everyday too.

My main problem is the icing portion. It just never has a 'clean' look to it. Either I have too little or too much on there. And I don't think any decoration can make a poorly iced cake look good.

Also, my actual cakes always look uneven. Any tricks about that?

K for the icing problem, invest in an icing tip (looks like a giant basketweave tip) also called a quickicer. It puts on a consistent layer of icing on the cake and makes it soo much easier to cover you cake evenly.
Now as for the uneven cake surfaces, if you have a nice large bread knife (really needs to be serrated), just trim off the offending parts to make the cakes level or straight.
If you have a decent canvas to work on the painting is lots easier as they say.
