I am doing a cake for my kids party next week. It will have farm animals made from Royal Icing. Does anyone have pics to share of icing animals? In the gallery all I see are Fondant, etc. Granted, I haven't looked through all 49 pages, but quite a few.
I have never made them before so I was wanting to make them in advance to give me time to redo if necessary. How long can they sit and still be fine to put on the cake?
Thanks! Kris
Do you have any books? Like Wilton's yrbks have a section in the back on how to 'figure pipe'. Even if they say to do it in b'cream it can be done in royal exactly the same.
How many/what animals do you need to make? I might be able to take some pix using b'cream for you if we have time.
Thanks for the response! I am planning on doing the barnyard cake from the 2002 Wilton yearbook - page 7. It instructs to make animals out of royal icing, and does give step by step instructions in the back for each animal. The picture shows 2 laying cows, 2 standing sheep, 1 laying sheep, 2 standing pigs, 3 laying pigs, 5 chickens and 10 or so ducks. Also a horse head on the barn.
I have only ever worked with buttercream. I picked up the ingredients to make royal icing this evening and plan on attempting them tomorrow.
If you have any tips, I would love to hear em!
Make sure your equipment is **TOTALLY** grease free. Be sure to whip your icing 5-7 minutes if using a KA (heavy duty mixer) and 10 minutes if using a handheld mixer. Do NOT skimp on the mixing time. DO NOT! cover your bowl w/a wet towel. Cover right on the icing w/plastic wrap, then cover the bowl w/plastic or foil. Always keep unused icing covered & the icing tip covered when not in use.
Using warm water will make the mixing time a bit shorter.
Make your animals on plastic wrap covered board. There will be less chance of breakage. Be sure the wrap is totally wrinkle free.
Let them dry overnight or longer. Do not cover them. Once they dry they can be kept for yrs if not exposed to moisture
I'm sure y ou will do just fine.
