I am having a Candy Clay melt down. I just made my first batch just a few minutes ago. Not hard to do...right? Then why does it look like it is seperating as it sits on my counter? Is it supposed to do that?

What have I done wrong? I followed the directions from the Wilton book on how to make it. HHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLPPPPPPP!!!!!

Relax...it does that. That is some of the fat from the chocolate. Let it sit until if firms up, then you can knead it back together. If you blot it, your clay will be too dry and crack.

A trick that can help reduce the separation- once the chocolate is melted, stir in the corn syrup, just until it is barely blended. Then dump the mass out onto whatever you use. As it sets, it seems to stay together a bit better, although you still have to knead it.

Good advise, JoAnnB. I have found also that, if I add just a little black gel color to it, and remove just a bit of the excess fat, it does crack to make a beautiful gray marble for tombstones at Halloween. It wasn't what I THOUGHT would happen, but fortunately it was EXACTLY what I was looking for in a headstone. icon_rolleyes.gif Go figure!
