Just thought I'd post what I learned about making helmet facemasks this weekend. I started working with GP, but had a hard time trying to figure out the correct scale. I was draping it over a smallish cylinder oatmeal box to let it dry. Needless to say, I got frustrated and thought there had to be an easier way!
Went to walmart and bought 18 guage floral wire, then using wire cutters, bent it into two pieces, the piece that starts at a higher point on the helmet and touches the "field," and the piece that starts at a lower point on the helmet and goes straight across. Then I took a small piece and twisted the ends of it around the first two pieces to bridge them and support the upper piece in place. The two main pieces were attached to the cake by bending the ends perpendicularly so that they pushed into the cake about 1".
I then rolled long thin logs of fondant and cut them approximately to the desired lengths. Using an exacto knife, I cut the logs not quite halfway through, down the length of each log and brushed inside the slit with water. I applied the fondant logs to the wires, allowing the wire to slip into the lines I had cut. The moistened fondant closed right over the wire with only a little urging. For the vertical piece in the front, I cut a small piece, made the shallow slit lengthwise and smashed the ends flat. The flat ends went over the fondant on the other wires, while the vertical wire was hidden in the slit.
When doing it, I wasn't sure it was going to work, but if I do another one, I will be sure and do a tutorial with pictures.
