Hi everyone:
I really need help with the celtic patchwork cutters. No matter how I try I cannot get it to turn out the way it should.
I have used crisco very heavily on the cutters and it still won't work. I am not sure if I am rolling the fondant thin enough or if there is a better way to do it.
I want to cut it out and then place it on the front of the cake but there must be a trick to using these as I have not been successful.
Can anyone give me some advice on how to work with these.
Thanks everyone.
Kathy
Instead of shortening, dry dusting the piece with a very fine dusting of cornstarch. I keep some in a stocking bag. You can also lightly dust the cutter, as long as it doesn't fill the pattern. you should be able to tap it (give it a smack) on the counter and the piece should pop loose. You can use a straight pin to pull it slightly loose on the back.
I use a light paintbrush and brush my cutter with cornstarch or powdered sugar. If you are using the cutters for impressions only, then the dusting isn't necessary. If you are using the cutters for design work and placing them on your cake, I use 1/2 fondant and 1/2 gumtex - just a little bit thicker and then use an exacto knife to cut the pattern. Then you can paint your design or whatever, place it on your cake with some RI without damaging your cutter work. I also allow my design to dry some before I paint, etc. and again before I place it on the cake. I use the smaller icing spatulas or medical tweezers to move the design to the cake. I've not had luck with the cutters and just plain fondant, but maybe someone else can shed some light on what I'm doing wrong.
Thanks MimiFord
Your suggestions did work and with a lotttttt of patience I was able to cut out the design with an exacto knife. It is all painted and drying ready to put on the cake.
I could never have figured it out the cornstarch is better than using crisco and the exacto knife makes nice clean lines. I do have to admit that it is a time consuming and careful job though.
Thanks again
Kathy
Glad it worked for you!!
Yes, you do have to have patience; but it gets easier the more you do it. You'll have your own system, and maybe even a better way to do it to share with us once you work with them more.
Would love to see a pic when you're done.
The last cake I made was for MIL's birthday - a cameo. SIL's took my cutter design off and threw it in the trash before they cut the cake because they knew it couldn't be eaten, so now I'm taking pics before I take the cake anywhere!!!
