Attempting First Topsy Turvy.... Will Any Recipe Be Okay?

My niece is turning 16 in a week. I want to blow her mind with a topsy turvy cake. I have some flavors in mind. Will any recipe work for this type of cake set-up? I will probably only do 2 tiers... unless I get REALLY brave. Thanks for all the help!

i don't think it should matter about the flavour...i guess it depends on the density...i mean, you would probably have to make sure that whatever flavour you choose, the cake itself should be able to withstand the weight of another cake...hopefully someone with more experience with this will give more details ![]()
the cake itself should be able to withstand the weight of another cake...
Tiered cakes never should have to withstand the weight of another cake, just be able to stand on its own. The internal structure is what holds the whole thing up.
It's best to make a topsy turvy with a very dense cake, such as a pound cake. That recommendation comes from both personal experience and from the person who did the tutorial here on CC, BKeith Ryder. Less dense cakes just don't hold the shape or the weight of the fondant well at all.
It's also recommended that you use very little buttercream filling between the layers, and don't use slippery fillings like sleeve fillings or jams.
I also use a very tiny level to make certain that the cut out wells and inserted cake plates are nice and level for each tier.
