Can anyone tell me how to do the stars on wires that I see in so many cakes? What gauge wire do I use? Are the stars made of fondant? How long do they need to dry/harden? How big can they be before the weight makes them tear the fondant on the cake?
Any help would be great.
Thanks.
The straight floral wire lengths from the craft store are used for these. The gauge of the wire depends on how big you decorations are.
It helps to dip the end of the wire in egg white or other edible glue before you insert it into the fondant. You can also sandwich it between to pieces (like for 2-toned stars)
They will need to dry several hours or overnight.
If you insert a drinking straw into the cake, the wire will hold without tearing the cake.
Thanks for the answer. That's great.
Thanks also for the straw tip. Do you use just one straw and put all of the wires coming out of it like in the center of the cake?
What i do to make my stars hearts etc on wires is i roll ot to about 3 or 4mm thick and i usually add tylose for hardening but to stick the wire in i heat the wire over a candle and insert hot that way the sugar content melts round the wire and is set on pretty much straight away and can be used sooner this way... i didnt know bout the straw tip so thanks so much for sharing that one JoAnnB awesome tip...
good luck cant wait to see apic of the finished cake

I did this cake a few years ago. The little hearts are RI, dried and then attached to the white wrapped wire with more RI, then dried. they are 18 inch wires in a group of 6 then bent in the middle the bunched end twisted and rewrapped with more white floral tape, then the resulting 12 wires opened like a fireworks starburst. They were just pushed into the cake about 2inches (on site).
