Marzipan as a cake cover is fairly unusual. Marzipan is almond paste, very sweet, yellow, and more expensive. Also, because it is nut based, many people avoid it.

However, is works for those few who really like almond flavor and don't need white.

Marzipan is good for decs, candies, etc. However, I will NOT use it. More gritty texture, and too strong of an almond taste for me. Fondant (mmf) is cheaper, easier, and tastes better if you flavor it.

Marzipan here is used under fondant as a first layer. It is traditionally used on fruit cakes but can be used on any cake. A lot of people don't like the taste I always give an option and rarely does anyone I make cakes for want it.
