This takes the cake! I donated a Christmas cake for a silent auction to a local children's foster parenting association. My boss was at the auction, she is the current president of the association, and spearheaded the evening. She told me the bidding was going well and she was excited to see just how much it would bring in when one of our towns older upper crust (bluenose) ladies who had been bidding on it decided to stick her finger into the icing (OOPS! she said to see if it was real). Of course the bidding stopped and she got the cake for $40.00. Evidently all that she wanted to pay for it. I can't believe the gall of some people. All the monies went to help foster children with clothes and personal items. I was dissapointed cause I think the cake was worth at least $60.00. Just wanted to vent my frustration. Pam from Bama

The nerve of some people. I think that cake is gorgeous and well worth much more than $60. You are probably right, she wanted the cake but didn't want to pay more than $40 for it. I am just sorry that that money was lost to the cause that it was intended for.

Oh, I am SO sorry that happened to you. The audacity of that woman! Your cake was beautiful and should have fetched WAY more than 40 bucks. Especially since the money was for such a great cause. This woman should be ashamed of herself.

That cake is beautiful!!! If I was the one running the show I would've told her she had to pay $100.~ for it just because she ruined the bidding on it. It would've also had a sign on it that said "Yes it is real but PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH!!!" lol and if she had touched it still she would've paid the $100.~. I think it's a beautiful cake and a wonderful event. You'd think for such an event she wouldn't have done something so stupid to stop the bidding so low... I mean it wasn't coming to you it was going for the children.... how rude! I would've asked to speak with this woman and probably verbally slapped her lmao. I can't believe the way richy people act. They act like just because they don't want to pay a high price for it they should get it at what they want because they are penny pinchers. I say pinch it hard lady cause you won't get any cakes from me unless ya pay full price cause that's just wrong! lol Good luck in the future hun and hopefully this woman enjoyed her cake that she stole and hopefully you won't have to deal with her and if you do hopefully her attitude has changed by then.

I cannot believe that!!! This is such a beautiful cake- it definitely would have brought in way more than $40! Did she really think they were bidding on a syrofoam cake? It would have brought in closer to $100-- she should have been fined!

that's a beautiful cake and you're right - how rude! Couldn't she have ASKED a question about it? I mean heck yeah if you're bidding on it you have a right to ask if it's real or just decoration - but you don't have a right to stick your finger in it!!!!!! I just don't understand why some people can't ASK! That is so frustrating and I'm so sorry for you. Next year place the cake under glass and away from itchy rude fingers!

If I had the tools & know-how I think I'd go into selling cake diplay boxes for bridal events, etc........ so that everyone could avoid finger pokers!

That's awful! What was she thinking?

I think at an auction with a lot of wealthy folks, that cake could have fetched at least $100

I hope she feels very foolish about what she did!

icon_surprised.gificon_mad.gif WHAT THE HE!! is WRONG with these people??

I've heard of that happening with people at shows and all kinds of places! icon_mad.gif They wouldn't want someone to stick a finger in their dang'd food---why would they do it to a damned cake???!?

Just pisses me off to no end. I'd like to see some old biddy sticking her finger into one of my cakes. I'd give her down the road in FRONT of people.

By the way---your cake is stunning. Gorgeous. Worth $100 easily.

GAH! icon_evil.gif

The cake is beautiful!!! Im sorry that it didnt go for more. Shame shame at the bluehair lady. I hate when ppl do that oh its fake lookie me lemme show you how fake it is and they stick their finger in it. I did a wedding cake a couple of weeks ago. While I was setting up the wedding party was decorating. When I was done setting up a group of women came over to the cake and were looking at it. One woman said oh look its a fake cake.........put her finger right through the fondant in the front of the cake. icon_mad.gificon_mad.gificon_mad.gificon_mad.gif It took all I had not to rip her head off. I walked over and said yes its real. Please dont put your fingers in it. I had extra roses so I was able to cover it up. grrrrrrrrrrrr I was so mad. My friends that were part of the wedding looked like icon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gif ........I was thinking how can I avoid this problem. I figured out if you put tull under the cake you could pull it up around the cake that would keep flys and nasty fingers out of the cake. What do you think?

That reminds me of what we used do do as kids with the last cookie, everyone wants the last one, someone always asks "will you share?" Let me think about it...lick it...sure you can have some. Gee no thanks!

You would think old upper crusties would know better. Your cake is beautiful.

by the way I notice you are from Alabama too! Nice to see somebody from here!

The nerve of some people. I have taught my children better than that. Hands behind your back kids. No touchy! I'm so sorry that you had to go through the hurt of that event. Again, your cake is beautiful.

I think I would have just went off on her for doing such a thing! Do you go break an antique to just make sure no one else will buy it and you can get it for less? No and if you do you pay full price for that sucker without any choice in the matter.

The cake is beautiful and she should have been charged for the full amount that a cake such as yours would have retailed for. Opps my butt!

Wow...and she GOT AWAY with it....

Next time you donate something for auction place a "RESERVED" price on it.

That means..you won't take less than....X AMOUNT and the bidding has to start at that amount.

or next time you donate something edible..you can make sure that the caller...states...this edible is worth...X AMOUNT..

I don't want you to start getting calls for this cake..and people asking you for that 40.00 cake at the auction....as it is soooooooo worth more than that..

It's very neat, well executed and above all LOVELY to look at.

Sorry this not only happened to you but to the charity you were so trying to help. Someone should write this woman a discrete note, as to why the bidding stopped and how could she jeopardize the product like that. I would approach the your boss, the organizer of the event.

but, If I'd been there..I would've jumpped out of my chair and IMMEDIATELY told the auctioneer to keep the auction going..that I would RETIRE that cake that had been touched and bake a brand NEW one for the winner.

So embarassing the HECK out of that WITCH! right there and then!

That's even better indydebi. Can you imagine the fun it would be outbidding everyone just knowing the little blue haired, finger poking lady would have to pay double. That could be a record auction for the charity! LOL LOL LOL

Your cake is stunning!! Really should have sold for a lot more than $40!
Must be an Alabama thing - I'm from about as south as you can get - 10 minutes from Gulf Shores. I have trouble getting more than $30 for a cake. It does seem like the director of the auction should have put a higher starting bid for your cake!!

icon_mad.gif That is unexcuseable! I think she should have been made to pay a minimun fee becuse she single handedly stopped all the bidding with her "oops" icon_rolleyes.gif
I some how do not believe it was an honest mistake. If you are bidding on a food item with others why would you touch that item? No one would want to eat something someone else has touched.

This disgusts me, because she basically took money away from the charity. If she had any class at all, she would make an additional, sizeable donation. She's old enough to know better than to stick her finger into food-didn't we all learn that as children? I guess "bluenose" doesn't equal good manners.
Good to know that your beautiful cake was really doing well in the bidding though, huh?

That woman has absolutely no calss at all! How in the world could she stick her finger in a food item like that! It just goes to show you that money doesn't buy class and manners.
The cake is gorgeous and you should be pleased that this lady wanted it so badly she would stoop to a low by sticking her finger in it!
I am not sure how she was just able to saunter up and do that while the bidding was going on - perhaps next time the items for bid should not be so close to those bidding for them!
I was also sorry top hear about that other story with the lady poking her finger in through the fondant of that wedding cake! Some people will stop at nothing in their jealousy to ruin the work others have done even if it means ruinging someone's wedding. I mean, how could you do that?
I am aghast!

What was she doing up by the cake during the bidding anyway? The auctioneer should have tole her to sit down and put her hands in her lap!! I believe in carma though - she took from needy children, and what goes around comes around. ( I just wish we could be there to see when it does LOL ) Keep you chin up and keep up the BEAUTIFUL work!!

Could you have asked the bidding to continue and you would make an identical replacement cake for the highest bidder without this lady's "personal touch"?
