Interesting. I don't rinse or salt mine, didn't know I was supposed to! I drain off the milk, mix again, and drain off the rest of the liquid. I have the 1/2 c Glad containers, fill one up and put it in the fridge, one out on the counter to use.

Okay, I had read about this on this site and knew I had some H Whipping Cream that I needed to use. So, I had to try this. It was COOL! My 13-yr-old son thought so too! I am going to try something next time, though. I'm going to add about 1/8 tsp of butter extract, as we like a more butter-y taste (that's what we get for being city butter buyers, right?). Anyone have any "no don't do that" or "yes, that would work okay" advice on adding the butter flavor?

CC is SOOOOO cool when these types of threads are the ones that prevail!!! thumbs_up.gif

Ok I remember doing this when I was in Kindergarden which was about 15 years ago and I still remember how much fun it was and I never figured it out I always just remember shaking it up and everyone having a chance. So all of you who are doing this with your children this is something that they will remember for along time. This is truly a heart warming memory.

Word of advice...if you have a very energetic preschooler, don't use a glass baby food jar - especially if you're in a room with a tile floor! I do this every year with my class of 4 year olds. The first year we had a jar fly out of the shaker's hands and hit the tile floor - big mess! I now use plastic containers and I tape the lid on to prevent leaks since some of those plastic ones don't close tightly.

We do add salt to the cream, but I've never rinsed the butter. Is there a reason why we should???

If the buttermilk isn't rinsed out completely, the butter can go rancid on you. Now if you are making a very small amount which will be used immediately or in a day or two (as long as it is kept refrigerated) there will not be a problem. In other words the fat has a long self life, but buttermilk doesn't. By the way don't toss the buttermilk use it in your cooking.

Yes. I just put ice water in the container and swish it around and pour it out.

I always kept the water faucet running with cold water and held the butter in my hands under the water and kind of squished and kneaded and rinsed at the same time. Then I would put in a container and work in the salt.

multi-layers of cheese cloth work great to squeeze out all the excess moisture and allow you to dunk and redunk the butter.

to extend the making time == as in keep the kids busier longer....

put in very clean plastic jar and instead of shaking...

everyone sit in circle and roll the jar back and forth to each other on the floor (how we did it when I was in kindergarten many, many moons ago)
