Witch's Fingers Are Spreading!
Baking By Newatdecorating Updated 4 Oct 2007 , 11:59am by fiddlesticks
Needless to say, I am not happy with the way these turned out! This was my third time trying and they did not keep their shape. I even put the cookie sheet in the freezer for about 20 minutes before I baked the cookies. They came out looking like monster's fingers!
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to keep this from happening!
Thanks!
Newatdecorating.. HEY I just got your pm ! I just dont understand ?? Do you use NFSC recipe , For your reg cutout cookies and its fine ?? but this spreads ??? Like I pm,d you I use this recipe all the time & it never spreads !! Are you using the recipe from kitchengifts.com ?? And are you using all purpose flour ?? NOT self rising ???
NFSC recipe from Kitchengifts.com and all purpose flour. I only used half the dough. I've got to bake and decorate some cookies for a Halloween bouquet, so it will be interesting to see if it spreads with them. Makes me wonder being it will be from the same batch.
Newatdecorating That is very strange !! Please let me know if your cutout cookies spread to !! There was another post right above yours ( I think ) Someone has the same prob you are. But Not sure if they are using the same NFSC recipe? But they are having the spreading problem to !! And your cookie sheets are cold to ??? Im sorry, I just cant think of any reason for it ! Do you use it with success everyother time ???
Those are just gross looking ![]()
Are those almonds for the nails?
I use the NFSC recipe from this site, and it does not spread when I bake, but I have never tired to make a cookie that thick, maybe thats the problem?
mrstoponak Hi She is tring to make the bloody fingers like mine ( in my photos ) And wants them about the same size ( at least I think thats what shes going for ? ) They really shouldnt be spreading !!! Any ideas ??? Thanks ! Im stumped !!
I'm sorry I don't have any answers as to why they're spreading. I agree, they do look gross -- in a good way. So she's a witch who bakes; nobody trusts a skinny witch, er cook. You can just say she's been eating the children who've been eating her house! ![]()
Ursula40 HEY I did get your pm about how to make my bloody fingers ! I will pm you the recipe as soon as I can ! Sorry for the delay... I will be home soon ! Thanks !!!
Well, I used the other half of my dough today and didn't have a single cookie that spread. They came out perfect! I don't know what the deal was with the witch's fingers......just aggravating!
Im so glad to hear that.... Any idea what it was ???? let me know if you figure it out !
I have one possibility. The witches' fingers are thicker than a typical cookie, I think. As a result, they take longer to get hot enough to "set" all the way through. When the dough is warm, but not hot enough to set, the leavening has a chance to work, rising the dough. With the thicker cookies, there would be a longer time period in which the rising could occur. Just a theory, though.
If this is the case, using less baking powder would help.

redpanda HI Never know maybe that is it ... But I made them ( my photos ) and mine dont do that ??? its one of those crazy cake ghosts ( it is halloween time ) you know how they like to mess things up ! thanks for the thought
