Needless to say, I am not happy with the way these turned out! This was my third time trying and they did not keep their shape. I even put the cookie sheet in the freezer for about 20 minutes before I baked the cookies. They came out looking like monster's fingers!

I would appreciate any suggestions on how to keep this from happening!

Thanks!
LL

NFSC recipe from Kitchengifts.com and all purpose flour. I only used half the dough. I've got to bake and decorate some cookies for a Halloween bouquet, so it will be interesting to see if it spreads with them. Makes me wonder being it will be from the same batch.

Those are just gross looking icon_wink.gif

Are those almonds for the nails?

I use the NFSC recipe from this site, and it does not spread when I bake, but I have never tired to make a cookie that thick, maybe thats the problem?

I'm sorry I don't have any answers as to why they're spreading. I agree, they do look gross -- in a good way. So she's a witch who bakes; nobody trusts a skinny witch, er cook. You can just say she's been eating the children who've been eating her house! icon_lol.gif

I'm going to try and make these, any hints on how to do the colouring? Got some whole almonds when I was shopping today, can't wait to get started on these fingers

Well, I used the other half of my dough today and didn't have a single cookie that spread. They came out perfect! I don't know what the deal was with the witch's fingers......just aggravating!

I have one possibility. The witches' fingers are thicker than a typical cookie, I think. As a result, they take longer to get hot enough to "set" all the way through. When the dough is warm, but not hot enough to set, the leavening has a chance to work, rising the dough. With the thicker cookies, there would be a longer time period in which the rising could occur. Just a theory, though.

If this is the case, using less baking powder would help.
