Please Tell Me The Reason Of Posting Cakes
Decorating By wgoat5 Updated 3 Oct 2007 , 12:13am by Heath
Please people tell me YOUR reason for uploading your pictures. I would like to know.
1. If you upload pictures on this site what is your main purpose? To get them commented on? To show people what you accomplished? Or for no reason at all?
I am sorry, it bothers me that some people complain about having too many ??'s asked of them, they have a life also, but yet they continue to upload photos. Wouldn't it really be safer if you just didn't? Or is it just to up heave the forums with your talent then leave people hanging in suspense?
Ok this will be locked I know...someone on the cake bandstand will complain that I am talking about THEM I am sure.
Sorry Heath Sorry Jackie and sorry to all of those I have offended. I'm just tired of being made to feel like I am INFERIOR to some around here.
I personally upload pictures for myself, and for others at my skill level. There are few people out there that appreciate the hard work that goes into a cake. So it's nice finding a community that share the same hobby/appreciation for our Art form. It can definately be intimidating seeing some of the cakes on this website. I know for me, I doubt I'll ever be as good as some of the ones on here. I think it's great to have different levels of skills on here so we can all learn from each other. And if someone were to ask a question on one of MY cakes.. I'd be Thrilled! When I go searching for an idea.. I stay away from the super duper fancy ones and go for ones that I know I can actually do. ![]()
It's like pictures of our children....when we're around other mom's, we pull out pics of our kids! When we're around other cake decorators, we pull out pics of our cakes! ![]()
I put them on to share and to return the generousity of others who have shared their photos with me. I get great ideas from other cakes on here, and I hope they might get a good idea from me.
I post for those same reasons but I think there are those that do it for a little encouragement. Some need a "gut check" to feel good about what they are doing, but as we all know, we are our own worst critics, so to hear from someone else that it is great brings up our cake self esteem.
Unfortunately we don't know who is which on this site and sometimes questions get asked to those that just want to share, not really looking for comments.
We just need to appreciate all sides and talents and if your question doesn't get answered, use your talents and make something equal or better!
Good question though!
I upload pictures for many of the same reasons already mentioned. I'd like comments and feedback. I'd like to share my original ideas and I'd like to share my representation of ideas that I probably got here at CC. I would be so honored to have a question about one of my cakes.
I guess my skill level tends not require questions about techniques. It's OK...I'm improving with each cake.
I do feel a little put off when I ask a decorator a question in a forum, under a photo comment, or even in a pm and receive no response. I try to take it with a grain of salt and just try to figure things out on my own...or I post a new topic and usually get some help from someone.
This is a great place and I guess I share because others share...and it is cool to me to see my cakes on CC, whether anyone else appreciates them or not. ![]()
Well Im with all of you, I appreciate the sharing of ideas.. and have had many wonderful people respond back to me on what technique they are using... and it helps my road to be a little easier.
there is a way for those who DONT want to receive comments etc.. they can opt out of having comments left. Just change it in their profile.
I know there are a few who do that. Just by that statement alone I know that that person may not want to share so I dont bother with PM them for any questions or comments on techniques.
I look to those like me who are happy to share and uplift someonelse with what knowledge I can pass along.
God Bless tos CCers who share... I would never had touched a cake had it not been for them!!

Christi, the only person who can make you feel inferior is you by allowing yourself to feel that way! Have you looked at your own cakes lately miss?? They're great! Don't let anyone or anything make you feel any thing less than great because obviously you post your cakes because you're proud and that's that!!
Don't you worry your little cupcake off.....you are not inferior to anyone here. We all have our own levels of learning and are at different stages.
Oh and in the end....it's all just cake!!![]()
I have to say that even though I haven't uploaded many pictures (did my first two today... thanks to Doug for the resizing link)... I did just for the ideas that they may provide to others. I swear I sit in the picture gallery for hours on end just looking at pictures on this website. I have gotten so many ideas and great tips from just looking at the pictures.... as well as answers to a lot of my questions. Some of them are so amazing and I know that my pictures won't come anywhere close to theirs, but the inspiration they provide makes me want to post the pictures after I'm done with the cakes.
Well, I've only posted one picture but only because I just did it and just discovered the site (and I'm still getting remotivated to try cakes). I promise once I pull out old pictures and scan them I'll put them on here. Horrible ones and all. ![]()
I think I do it because you guys appreciate what I went through to get a cake to the finished product. My family is always great about talking about it but you guys have suffered through it all to completely understand the joy at finishing it. I would love to be good enough for people to want to borrow my ideas but I'm not there yet so for now, I just enjoy seeing people actually look at my cake. (yes, my one lone cake!
)
I also think it allows me to show people what they helped me do.
HI
This is why I share my creations: Although I am a classically trained pastry chef, who can make delicious delicious pastries, I STINK at cake decorating. I try and try but... So when something does come out cute I like to have input. I like to share my ideas and I like getting ideas. I like talking to everyone. I am not intimidated, and I just want people to see we all start somewhere and maybe even though we try hard that area may not be our area of expertise we can all still have fun with our passion making beautiful things for those we love.
Ok, if you're inferior, then I'm screwed.
I post because I'm proud of what I did but I know I can get better and would like suggestions on how to do that.
If people don't want questions, then they should turn off the comments button-thingy (technical term there) and they won't get any questions.
Christi, there should be no offense taken to your question by anyone other than maybe the thimble full of people you are referring to and that is OK. Selfishness and self adoration is not a good thing and does not play well with others, but only for self gain in one way or another.
I upload for sharing and learning. I have looked at hundreds if not thousands of cakes for inspiration and hope my cakes may be the same inspiration for a newbie. Even more of a newbie than me!! I AM still a newbie to cake decorating and look to many seasoned decorators for inspiration daily. If I can be of help to anyone then I am happy to do so.
You have a good heart and it shows in your posts. Don't let "those" get to you........you are a far better person than that!!! ![]()
I post pictures to get critiques to help me improve. I also like to show people what I have made. It's fun to post your pictures.. it's also a first step towards showing customers your work. If I can show all of you I can show propsective customers.. right?? ![]()
I try really hard to respond to everyone who asks questions about my cakes.. not that I have tons that are noteworthy.. LOL.. but I try.

Nice to know that! I'm the opposite....I can't make a pie to save my butt. If the crust doesn't come out of the red box in the refrigerated section, then it's just not edible! I really wish I had that talent!
....I just want people to see we all start somewhere and maybe even though we try hard that area may not be our area of expertise we can all still have fun with our passion making beautiful things for those we love.
I have a number of pics saved in my favorites that are from "newbies". The idea they had, the cake they created is wonderful and I want to try to duplicate it. They may think it's not "up to par" or "good enough", and maybe it's not magazine-perfect, but I LUV the cake....I LUV the idea they created! A cake doesn't have to be "perfect" to be inspiring! ![]()
As I've said a number of times, I learn as much from "newbies" as I do from the old timers on here!! Keep posting!!! ![]()
I don't have a problem sharing my work and I get asked questions all the time on CC. Doesn't bother me a bit, and better yet, if I can help then I'm happy to do so! Sometimes I post to help answer a question ("if you look in my pix, I did that technique on this cake, so you can see what it looked like...") and sometimes I'm just having fun with a project (like the tye-dye tee shirt cookies) and I wanted to share the joy. No harm, no foul. ![]()
After all of the arguements the last several months about comments vs favorites and everything else people have argued about posted photos, I decided to stop posting pics at all. I wish there were a way for me t odelete all of them honestly, but if they are in favorites, you can't delete them. I have some really good pics since beginning of summer, but I don't post them anymore. It's too much hassle listening to people complain about saving in favorites and not commenting, not answering questions, etc so I've just stopped totally.
I upload pictures just to share what I have done. I really dont think you should put off if someone doesnt answer a question. I dont let it bother me. I know I got a lot of pm's or questions and do try to answer them. But I am sure there are some I miss or forget to answer. It really isnt anything personal or an unwillingness to share on my part. And I would hate for someone to feel hurt because I didnt respond.
Like most everyone here, I post mine because of idea sharing. Also to get comments on how I did.
Almost all of my cakes have come from inspiration from CC. So where would I be with my decorating without CC? I can't imagine cake life without it.
Indydebi- My only source of pie crusts come from that box too. EVERY time I make a homemade pie crust, they always ask, "is this Pillsbury?"
Now when I use Pillsbury, and someone asks, "is this homemade?" I just smile and say yes.
If they don't know the difference, why bother explaining? ![]()
I post mine as a record for myself so I can see how far I've come with all the wonderful hints and tips picked up and shared on this site. I use the pictures on here for so much inspiration that I'd get a total kick out of knowing that I inspired someone! It is also a good way to get more hoenst feedback - family(except my mom) and friends tend to sugarcoat!
But Jen... your comment confused me... since I'd love to see some of your really good pics!!

Are you not posting since you don't want to feel bad about not getting comments / favourites? Or do you not want to feel obligated to comment on someone photo since people are commenting on yours? The debate over the favourites / comments I find just inane.... like a junior high competition. But I'm really curious (honestly...not trying to be mean or sarcastic) over how you stopping posting photos will help with that debate?(if you're ok with answering, if not, no worries!)
Well, from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone that has posted their pictures on CC. I have learned more from here than any class taken or book bought. This is such a great community. But just like in every community, family, society, etc... you will find people who are not nice. So, the heck with them. I am just thankful that they are so many of you that are absolutely wonderful.
I know my pics are not the greatest, but I still post to share and get some feed back. I appreciate honesty.
Angelika
Debi are any of my nasty creations in your favs? lol boost me damn you! ![]()
Ok now that that is out of my system ![]()
I post my pictures to get encouraging words from those who are better then me to tell me that I've got something good going and to keep at it. In my life I only have my husband, my daughter, my father, and my best friend who support me in this, which yes it is a lot of support but the one I'm aiming for the most is my own mother... she never has and I'm afraid she never will... but I'm striving to show her one day that I can be one of the best at this and even if I'm not up their with the ones we see on TV if I can make a cake as beautiful as some of the better CC'ers.... I'll be damn proud and happy with that! lol. So yeah I post to let the ones JUST starting out know it's possible to go from nasty looking and ugly and icky looking to somewhat nice looking lmao... and I post to share with others who have shared with me... and to pray that someone will come along and leave me a comment that means so much more then they will ever know.....

I could honestly care less how many favorites or comments I get. The reason I stopped posting them is that I don't always have time to comment on people's photos. I am busy, have two small children, a house to keep up with, volunteer activities at school, etc, and sometime just add it to a favorite without posting a comment. There have been so many debates about how awful people are who don't comment but add favorites, don't answer questions that are left o ntheir photos, don't get very many comments and their feelings are hurt, etc, that I just stopped. People get so petty, and it seems the past few months arguments have gotten really bad. I rarely post muc heither because of it, but do read everyday! I'm not trying to start an argument, and I really don't care how many comments, favorites, etc I get. I just decided it was easier to stop posting them at all instead of people getting upset that I didn't go check my comments everyday to see if someone asked me a question instead of pm'imng me the question.
I post my pictures because my friends and family are just not into cakes like I am! I like to share my pictures with everyone on CC, because everyone here understands it's not "just a cake"! No matter what our level of expertise or training, we all put alot to time and energy into our cakes and it's nice to have someone who understands that. I welcome constructive critisim. I feel it helps me to improve.
I have been posting my pictures from the time I first started decorating until now. I can look back and see how much I have improved in 2 years! (still have along way to go, but definite improvement!
