Please Tell Me The Reason Of Posting Cakes
Decorating By wgoat5 Updated 3 Oct 2007 , 12:13am by Heath
Hi Everybody,
I started not to answer this but decided to anyway.
I post pictures on this site because I might have an idea which can help someone. I found this site by accident
when I was looking for a cake design, I was amazed at what I saw. I spent an entire week back in the summer looking at every single page of wedding cake photos. WOW I am still in the process of looking at each gallery page by page.
I have cakes in my favorites for lots of reasons, techniques, color combos, design, just to name a few reasons. I was a lurker in the forums for a while and then I decided to post answers because everyone has something they can bring to the table! I have even helped a couple of people find things and I was able to find a discontinued item for a fellow CCer and will be shipping it to her later this week. Where else can you find friends like that?
I have also started recognizing names on a regular basis I could mention some but I wouldn't want to leave anyone out. I will say this you are one of the ones I recognize and always look forward to seeing what you say.
I posted some of my cakes and was amazed that they have been looked at, some I know are good but a couple of them are not my best but, something in them may help somebody else, a design the color combo or they may even be able to take my design and take it to the next level.
I guess I have been in the dark but I have missed the catty thread or remarks I just know I love this site!

I see what jenlg means about not checking her photos, though. As far as I know, when comments are uploaded on pictures, you don't receive an email which means you really only know a picture has been commented on by actually going to the gallery to check on your picture. So time consuming!
Plus, sometimes people comment on old photos since people join CC daily they will see pictures that have been uploaded for months. I doubt most people go back to check their comments then.
I have a feeling this is what is the cause for most comments being left unanswered.
Actually aswartzw you can get emails saying you have a comment ![]()
Thank you jibbies and ziggy!! And everybody else who commented on why you upload your cakes. It is interesting to know, and I am glad. I have had soooo many great run in's with you all and just a handful of bad ones. And I will try to grow a thicker skin. (Lord knows I need it)!!
And I will try to grow a thicker skin. (Lord knows I need it)!!
If you figure out how to do that, can you share the recipe with me?
And, if I don't get off of here, I'm gonna put down roots in this seat. Chin up and everyone, please keep posting those pics. I love 'em all. And, those of you who are not yet ready to post your own coffee table book of cakes, you especially keep posting! If I ever do a cake worthy of posting a picture, it will not be one done by a top-notch decorator. It will be one inspired by someone fairly new to the craft, who has done something that grabs my attention and makes me think, "You know, if I really work at it, I just might be able to do that one!"

You can get an email when comments are left, but it doesn't tell you which cake. So you would have to sort through all your pictures. That is very time consuming. I can see how people don't respond to questions. They are busy participating somewhere else. Best way is to pm a person-if they share they share-if not find another way. I don't take things personal-I just move on....![]()
I like to share my pictures because I'm proud! (even though I'm not that great!) I also appreciate the time people take in posting their photos. I would of never attempted some of the cakes I have tried-if it weren't for cc'ers willingness to share their photos. ![]()
Oh I understand ceshell and I promise I am not belittling anybody myself. But on the same note...if you post a picture please expect ??'s to be asked ya know? Because if I had just sent one of them a ?? on a pm about a cake then read what was said (because You can't hear a tone, computers are just really bad at taking things wrong), then you might feel pretty inferior like I did.
I gotcha, I think I just felt the need to bring it up because on the thread I'm thinking about, the integrity of the "non-answerers" was really being called into question, like, they weren't even entitled to be busy and have a world outside of CC. It was like they were being told "Well if you don't have time for us little guys then you shouldn't even be here on CC" which is awful. I never got from any of THEM that they thought that anyone was a "little guy" though. And I never got that any of them were upset that ?? were asked, or even that a LOT of ?? and PM's were received...they were just upset that they were indirectly being told "Find the time to answer those ?s or you are haughty and selfish and you don't belong on CC." And I think that outlook is definitely contrary to the whole purpose of this fabulous site!
I post so I can share. I LOVE this site and all of the decorators on it. You guys are great I LOVE looking at all of the cake creations. I am on this site between cooking, cleaning, and cooking cakes. I just leave my computer on then when I have a few spare minutes I am off to the computer room to look at the new cake pictures. So I would like to THANK every one for posting their pictures, I have gotten so many different ideas from you guys, ideas that I could and would not have ever thought to do. So once again THANK YOU very much. DiannaSue.
Well.. for me.. I find that my family gets tired of hearing about and seeing pictures of my cakes. I am by far no professional just something I found that I enjoy doing ( makes me all giggly to make a cake ). I live in a town where I have no non inlaw family or friends near by. When I first started trying to learn about cakes ( I needed a creative outlet) I stumbled on CC and was IMMEDIENTLY welcomed with open arms. Here I find that I am not shy nor do I feel I can not ask questions , in fear of being put down or made to feel as if I am a noob.
My reason of posting pictures is to share with my friends and family of CC. I get alot of ideas and have LEARNED SOOOOOO much here !!! Its my way of sharing what I have learned so that others can learn. One of my fave quotes.

You guys must have an odd setting or something. I get an email telling me a comment has been left. I click on the link in the email and it takes me directly to the pic with the comment. It's always worked this way for me.
What are you guys doing different? ![]()
You can get an email when comments are left, but it doesn't tell you which cake.
Actually it does tell you which cake. The first line goes something like "Leily left a comment on your "Square cake" to view click the following link" The cake name it mentions though is whatever you typed in, so if you don't add a title to your pictures then you are correct it won't tell you which cake it is, however the email gives you a link directly to your photo that you can click on and it will take you directly to it.
To answer the original question. At first it was to get feedback on my cakes (I mean who doesn't like verification and kudos for the good work we do) Now it is to add more ideas out there for everyone, I have so many pictures saved for ideas to try someday and I try to post cakes that there are not a lot of out there or a different take on the same idea someone else did.
I agree I always get notifications that someone has been so kind as to leave me a comment on such and such picture and I simply click the link and it takes me straight to that cake and I can scroll down view the comment and if needed PM to answer questions or PM with a thank you ![]()
I also post so I can share with non-CCers my creations. I can log on anywhere and show them my gallery
This is one of my main reasons for posting too. Many of the other reasons already mentioned too, but I love that I can go to work and share my cakes with friends there. My family (who has always been very supportive of me, God bless them!) also uses CC to check out my work.
I'm incredibly grateful to the CC community...I don't know that I would have attempted some of the cakes I've made if I hadn't discovered CC. Thank you to all of you who share & support! ![]()

Ditto on the quote!!!
And ditto about the dinner thread ![]()
Ditto to what Indydebi just said about the comments. You should have a link in your email that takes you to the new comment. I have to admit that I get excited every time I see there is a new comment.
And, boy was I excited to see some of my cookies as inspiration to others. And even better to see my name mentioned. It's nice to be appreciated.
I started posting because it's helpful when you have a theme in mind and someone else's cake can give you some ideas. I may be a beginner but if someone can look at one of my cakes and it turns a switch on in their head to help them with something they are working on it makes it all worth while. I don't expect credit or comments.
I don't post pictures of my cakes anymore because I am afraid if there is a chance that one of my cakes is anywhere close to theirs they will write a thread about me copying them. I don't need it.
I also don't come on the site like I use to because there seems to be the same threads about what other members do or don't do. They don't leave comments, their comments are too short, they post too many pictures, they copied my cake, I didn't get credit, they didn't respond to my question, they should'nt ask questions in the comment box and the Grand-daddy of them all they don't use proper grammer or spell correctly.
I have a life, I have hobbies, I like coming on CC for learning and advice. I have gotten answers when I've been in a stoop. I especially like watching a member grow in their work over time. I don't however enjoy the negative side, and yes I will admit I have been one of those who has gotten caught in one.

My thoughts exactly!
I post for varrious reasons...one, because I need the ego stroking sometimes when I feel like I did an awesome job on something. Or sometimes I post even when I don't do so great, so that I have a real representation of my abilities. I also post my military pics, because there aren't a lot of those on here, so it gives others some ideas of what they can do military wise. I also post, because when I answer questions, people can go look at my pics to see if I am BSing my way through the boards or if I really "know" what I am talking about. They can be the judge LOL.....I know that I like to see what others are capable of when they are giving suggestions of what to do or how to do it. I find it funny when people get so upset about the piddly debates that go on here. So what if people are upset that you don't respond to their comments. You don't want the comments turn them off....easy fix, if you do and you are busy, then don't worry about what other people say. If you like to bake from scratch and people say box is better...so what do what you think is best...don't fight about who is right. If you don't have time to comment and you save a pic and people are bugged by it....big deal or as my son would say, "Whobody cares!" I think it is funny that people choose to let the words of some keep them from posting their pics. If the snarky topics bug you stop reading them and do what you would have done before you had read them. If you would have posted your pics before you read all the debates then go ahead and post them, if you were never planning on posting a pic then don't. Don't let people get you down.
WGOAT (i hope that is right LOL) I am one of the "annoying" people who post a pic and then will post a thread about my pic if it is something I am really proud of so that I know it might get noticed. In the CC Pet Peeve thread, lots of people stated how that bugged them. I figure if it bugs them they don't have to read my posts, or answer them...it won't stop me from doing that in the future though. That is who I am, I am needy sometimes and I am okay with that. So, don't let others make you feel like less than you are. Take the positive and leave the rest behind. Geez this is long winded......I think after being alone with my 5 kids for the last couple days I needed "adult" talk.....LOL
Well since the OP acknowledged twice that they expected this thread to be locked, then clearly even the OP felt this thread was not consistent with our moderating policies.
I tried to put an end to this criticism when i locked the other thread, but I will re-state my viewpoint here.
It is not acceptable to criticize members who become overwhelmed with the amount of comments and PMs they are receiving and find themselves unable to respond to it all without unbalancing their lives.
Just because some members are able to respond to everything does not mean it is ok to bash on others who cannot.
Everyone is here because they love cake and cake decorating, but not everyone is able to put the same effort into assisting others. Its a fact of life.
I am tired of members bashing other members because they do not utilize CC in the same manner. Different people are here for different reasons. Everyone here needs to be respected. There are soo many members here, that everyone should be able to get tons of help on nearly any project, even if one particular member is not available or responsive.
I am really tired of members judging each other. Try to assume the best in each other instead of assuming the worst. Since "tone of voice" does not translate well in print, try reading every post with the most sweet voice overlaid on it, I bet a lot of negative situations would never arise.
This is Cake Central darnit, its time to get your sugary-sweet on ![]()
