you could sculpt some with fondant or you could use some marshmallows to make the snowmen...depending on the rest of your design

With my snowmen cake, I took two different sized styrofoam balls, put them on sucker sticks and then dipped them in really thinned down royal icing. Once they were dried, I piped on royal icing clothing.

If you're going to use buttercream, try using tip #12 and pipe a ball, building it up to the size you want. Then another ball, slightly smaller for the middle and even smaller for the head. If you took Wilton classes, it's just like making clowns.

I just did a Christmas cake with snowmen on it, although they were laying flat, but have a slight 3D effect to them. You could do the same technique, just one ball on top of another to make them standing upright.
Hope that helps.

I would use fondant. Dust your surface with plenty of icing sugar to prevent sticking and pretend you're playing with play doh

Are you trying to do a large snowman as in the cake would be the snowman? I would think it would be very difficult, even if you used supports, but I suppose you could use different sized ball pans and just stack them like any other stacked cake. I would think that if you made kind of a fat snowman you might be able to make it work.

If I am mistaken in what you are looking for, you could try:

cake balls
fondant
marshmallows
BC

Good luck!

I am not sure how big you want your snowmen but I used MMF to make snowmen on my seasons greetings cake and it worked like a charm. Good luck!

These are really cute snowmen, marshmallows dipped in white chocolate, I personally like the ones impaled on sucker sticks on their side, gives them the more rounded look. Quite an informative thread with pics.

If you don't mind if they're not 3-D, you could buy a snowman cookie cutter and use gumpaste or a cookie and have them standing up on the cake. Probably have to support it from behind.

Is it a funny snowman cake or serious? I just had a picture of some of the old Calvin and Hobbes cartoons where Calvin has snowmen run over, split in two, heads in hands - such funny stuff but then again I have a warped sense of humor. The Big marshmallows would be great and even some mini marshmallows for little snowmen. Just a thought.
