Ok, so I made my nephew an elmo cake and he fell apart. Anyone have any idea what happened. I made him on Sat, put him together bout 2am Sunday. i decorated him from 2-5:30am. We live an hour away from my and got there about 1pm. By 1:30 his eyes and nose fell completly off!!! icon_redface.gif I was mortified. When I got up in the am I had noticed his head was somewhat leaning forward and he had some cracks in the icing. I had 3 long dowels in him and toothpicks to hold the fondant eyes and nose.

Here's the progreesion....

Dunno, maybe ...did you stick in the toothpicks straight in? maybe if you had angled them in??

I did angle the toothpicks in. Should they have been on something longer? Was my cake too soft?

maybe your mix wasn't hard enough like a pound cake or maybe the tempeture where you kept it wasn't cold enough. I always put my 3d cakes in the refrigerator at very cold tempeture and tell the client to put it out about 2 hours before serving.

Yeah definately refrig your 3D cakes....I had to learn that too. They just aren't sturdy for traveling if you don't.

Sorry this happened to you! He started out looking so great! My guess would be that the cake was too soft and since the eyes and nose were probably a little heavier, the gravity set in and the soft cake couldn't hang onto the toothpicks. I've never done a cake like this and so I'm just speculating...

I made a cake like this recently and was so nervous that what happened to you may happen to me but fortunately it did not. I definitely think the cake mix makes a difference. I typically aad 1/4 cup extra of milk to my batters for a more moist cake and also use Homo Milk but for this cake I omitted the 1/4 cup and only used 2% Milk. In addition I kept that cake in the fridge and found the fondant eyes and nose hardened so then I was able to add extra toothpicks for support.
