Last week I bought a foam roller while shopping at the hardware store with my dh. You should have seen his face when I said it was for my cakes icon_surprised.gif Finally I got an order for buttercream iced cake so I could use my new tool!!
OMG!!! it's so amazing!!! Smoothing my icing was so easy and so quick, and even got sharp edges on my square cake without a problem. I'll use this method from now on, and if I want a pattern, I'll use the paper towels AFTER I've smoothed it out.

Thank you Melvira for sharing this method!!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

What is a foam roller? Like a small paint roller with foam instead of fibers?

yeah, thanks Melvira for the great tip!!
I tried it for the first time yesterday on the Asian Themed Anniversary cake, and i got the smoothest cake ever. I still need to work on the technique as i got i little bit of texturing on it, but i think i just wansnt using the right technique. I had a 6 inch roller and used it on an 11 inch cake.
I am interested in knowing how to clean it too, i ended up with red buttercream all over it and just washed it with dishwashing liquid by hand, but it didnt come out properly and i kinday smooshed it.
cheers
Nati

I run my roller in very hot water first and then just take very little dish washing detergent(and I mean really little) and gently squeeze the sponge and then just rinse again in hot water until the water runs clear.

HTH

http://cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-49423.html Here's the link to the thread where Melivira explains it. I finally got my rollers and tried it on my 12 x 18 cake and it was wonderful. Thank you so much Melivira.

I love it too! I am a newbie and started using it right away in Wilton I. My classmates would always ask me how I got my cake so smooth. I even posted my first cake with no decorations on it to show off how smooth it was.... Fabulous site and thank you thank you Melvira. Be sure to get all the soap out of your rollers. If you're not sure you could rinse them in a little water with white vinegar. If you are concerned about bacteria you could microwave damp roller for about 30 seconds on high...like cleaning a sponge....

This has to be one of the best tips I've picked up one here and it's all I use now. I got a package of 6" refills at Lowes so I never run out. I also wash with hot water and a little bit of dawn then rinse until water runs clear. Does anyone know if you can use it on top of an edible image to smooth it into BC?

I've also benefitted from Melvira's method. I use my foam roller with a sheet of either viva or plain paper. The cake comes out unbelievably smooth with such little effort. This also keeps the roller clean.

i'm trying this tonight! should i use parchment or wax paper as well? and should the icing be totally crusted then use the roller?

Yes, it needs to be crusted before using the roller or it will stick to the BC.

I read this method several weeks ago and tried it. I must be doing something wrong because I get more of a textured effect. I let the BC crust well also. icon_cry.gif

Are you using a very dense roller? It's a small skinny one 4-6" long. Mine is white but I think they also come in yellow and it has no texture to it.

The yellow roller heads are not dense enough foam, so if you use those it won't be as smooth. If you are really having trouble with it you can add a sheet of viva underneath, or like some people have said, a sheet of paper, wax paper, anything like that will work.

As far as washing it, I find that getting it wet with nice hot water, then rub a little dishsoap between your (clean) hands and then rub that lather all over the foam. That's easier to rinse out than adding the soap directly to the foam, but that works too.

Thank you guys for the wonderful feedback! You know how to make a girl feel loved, I can tell you that much!! Hugs!!

Well I have to say I was wondering about this so me and hubby went to Lowe's last month and I purchased a roller and a refill pack of heads and plan on using it for two sheet cakes I'm making for this weekend. I haven't used it yet but he was looking funny when I put that as well as a putty knife in the cart he said "What are you going to paint? and I don't need a putty knife I have tons of them" I said "well your knives have putty stuck to them correct?" he said "yeah why" I said "Because it's for a cake as is the roller so just hush!" he laughed and said ok whatever you know what you're doing I don't lol

I'll be sure to mention in the posting of my pics that I used this method icon_smile.gif

The roller I used is 6" long and has a white roller. It's not smooth; rather "spongy" actually. My sweet husband bought it for me at Lowe's and I really didn't notice what the tag said about denseness..... He was so excited about being able to help with the decorating and it was the cheapest "toy" he's bought yet.
I will try it again because to many of you have had great results with the method.
Melvira: please put a tutorial on CC!! thumbs_up.gif

Jackie did request a tutorial from me and I have made one, but I am currently in the process of adding pix, but I have to get a new roller... my sister is taking my Wilton classes and she confiscated my big roller! icon_wink.gif You should've seen me when I got the request... I was floating on air! I just love helping people!! icon_lol.gif

Good idea vww104. In my part of the world we don't have the viva paper towels but I'm guessing I can use parchment paper instead.

It is so cool to use the small one on the sides while you spin your turntable the roller turns and it's great. How does the paper towel or parchment method compare...have never tried it?
