Well I am glad to be back....this is my last bunch of cakes I WONT make anymore....I am going to cry and rant in this post so I am sorry.....I made a promise to make a political party cake for Nov. 7th.....I made this promise in September....My father passed on Oct. 28th....I still made the stupid cakes...at my cost....she told me she would pay me well....I made enough cake for 200 people. Homemade cakes, different fillings all that...granted the fondant cake was my first ever fondant cake...all I got was 60 bucks for both cakes....Oh I heard all kinds of great comments on the taste of the cakes. They look awful I guess...could it be I had more than her stupid cakes on my mind...like my father passing...what a family friend....no more...I have been disappointed for the last time...Thank you for letting me rant friends...and here are the cakes I made...without the stupid donkeys.
I too am sorry for your loss.
I remember the donkeys and how adorable they were. And now to see the cakes that went with them--wow!
I think people just don't get it when they see a decorated cake unless they have tried to actually do more than buy a mix and literally slap some canned icing on it. They think it is the same as fondant and figures and borders and such. I am sure they were great tasting but also wonderful looking--she doesn't get it so please don't think it was a reflection on your craftmanship. And $60 for both of those cakes is an insult!
Sorry about all this!
I am really sorry for the loss of your dad. My dad died when I was in college and I still think of himevery day.
Anyway--the cakes you made are really really great cakes--meaning they LOOK GREAT! The colors are bright and we all know how hard red is to maintain!
(Maybe make them for Republicans next time, we are all a bunch of capitalists
j/k)
Please don't give up. Take time for yourself but I hope we see more of your cakes!
I think they look really really good! You should be proud...disappointed, granted that you didnt get more money though. Lots more. Whenever I dont get paid enough I say...at least I have a picture for my portfolio!
I am sorry to hear about your dad. I was thinking I hadnt seen you lurking around cc in awhile.
I'm sorry to hear about all the difficult times you've had to go through lately.
Your cake experience shouldn't have been a negative one. You sure didn't need that on top of everything else. Unfortunately, my experience is - almost without fail - that when we let the customer pay us according to their conscience or what they think it's work...we always come up short. Even when it's someone we know quite well. They just don't know how much work goes into something that looks deceptively simple - let alone the cost of materials.
Especially when taking on a large project such as this one, set your price up front - and don't cheat yourself. You deserve to feel good about every cake transaction. You might lose a few jobs to the bargain hunters, but you can be sure you'll feel good about the ones you do get.
I have a rule that if I offer to do the cake, it's free. If someone approaches me about doing a cake - even if it's a a good friend, family or coworker - I use an established price structure. Everyone who knows me understands the rules of the game. I did a special cake for a friend of my daughter last summer and charged a lower price because it was essentially for my daughter. But, the boyfriend of the birthday girl sent me an extra twenty bucks because he thought it was so great. So, sometimes you do get nice surprises. But, I think that was a first! I expect it may be the last. ![]()
