A friend came to me and had decided on a last minute ( get this ) SURPRISE wedding. Surprising the family? Nope....the GROOM! Now he WANTS to get married and begs her everyday...lol but she is always working (she owns a pet grooming shop and a boarding kennel) and has 3 kids and is just soooo busy..that even tho they went and got a license ..she keeps telling him , soon...soon...we will just go to the justice of the peace when we have time.

Both have been married before but have never had a "real wedding" .and both families really wish they would..so here she drags me into it..of course. She goes and gets dresses and arranges the church reception hall etc. ...all in one day and gets the grooms best friend fitted for best man and does rentals on all the clothes ..including the groom (who sings and thinks he is going to be singing at a charity fund-raiser and was getting the tux for that!)

She has me doing the flowers ,cakes and food (with two days notice) but I had no wedding this wekend and it was a nice deal so I am doing it. She is a quite eccentric, quirky kinda person. Here comes the question...finally..lol. I have a couple of guidelines for the cake and would love any input from you guys..as I m kinda drawing banks.

She got different shades of purples for her attendants dresses and wants various shades of purple for the flowers...so ..she wants that for the colors of the cake as well.

She gave me free reign with the design...but as I said she is a fun loving kinda off the wall gal. She REALLY loved whimsy , mad hatter designs. it is for a little less than 100 people, but we want to make it kinda a big cake anyhow. 3 tiers minimum...but maybe 4.

Any suggestions? tiered...varying shades of purple..and DIFFERENT..

well just off the top of my head to the whimsy cake covered in white fondant with varying color purple stripes on one layer, circles on another and so on. I dont do wedding cakes so not sure how this will help.

Don't know if this is any help but from reading the story how he asks her almost every day maybe the topper could be a groom dragging a bride. You know you always see them the other way around.

I think she was hoping the cakes itself to be varying shades of purple...not sure tho ...I am thinking of four tiers bottom one dark purple fading to a light lavender top tier ...all round. Tilted.

She gave me free reign...and our local paper got wind of what she was doing and being a small town they wanted to cover this surprise wedding! So....now that turns up the heat a bit for me...knowing it will be photographed and in the paper most likely.

I am thinking instead of gradually getting lighter ...doing bottom tier dark..next one light lavender next one dark...top one light. Then doing stripes on at least one maybe 2 tiers?

I'd do darker shades of purple moving up to lighter on the tiers and then reverse the scheme with whimsey (fantasy) flowers placed here and there. So lighter flowers on the darker tiers, etc. Since you are doing so much, it would be a pretty easy cake to do.

The first thing that came to my mind was one of the wedding cakes here in the galleries that start out with a darker shade of the color at the bottom and get lighter as it goes up I have seen a blue shaded one and I think a pink one as well. I'll try to find it. I think I have it saved in my favorites.

i just did a wedding cake last week...whimsical and in different shades of purple!!! (it was my first cake disaster) but it all worked out ok for them...its in my profile....and you can see the different shades of purple....well working on it i was so horrified but it is exactly what they invisioned...minus the middle tier that was omitted!!! (totally collapsed) but the middle tier base was a deeper purple than that of the top and bottom one...it would have looked really nice....but at least you can see the purples...good luck!!!

I like christeena's idea a lot. You could have fun with that and it wouldn't be too hard to do.

Great input ladies! I know exactly the cakes you were talking about ..the pink one is in my faves! I also agree that the easier the better!..I do have some help getting it all done mainly my labor will be the cakes and flowers...my asst . willl be prepping most of the food along with the brides and my own teen age daughters helping out!

I like the idea of bright on dark...it pops.. yet is simple!

I like the varying shades of purple in the color for the whimsy cake from dark on the bottom to light on the top. I also think you should use the other purple shades to decorate the layers. Horizontal stripes on one, vertical stripes on another circles/dots on another and then maybe squares. If you use the instructions here and you want it to be 4 tiers, your top tier would use a 6, 7 and 8" round, your second tier from the top would use an 8", 9" and 10" round, the third tier from the top would be a 10", 11" and 12" round and the bottom tier would be 12", 13" and 14". That's a ton of cake. I would make the bottom and maybe the top as dummy cakes.

Another thing I did recently was to take a dummy of a heart cake and tip it up on it's side on top of a stacked cake and that was really fun.

Good luck!

I like your Idea of Dark, light Dark Light. Then you could put dark strips on the light cakes, but leave the dark cakes solid and put any flowers your going to use there. Or draw on flowers using the light color. I think tilted would work well with the theme. And I like the Idea of the topper of the groom pulling the bride. I just don't know how quickly you could get something like that.

I wish I had some cookie Ideas for you but my brain has stalled.

I think the graduating from darker to lighter is nice and then maybe some simple flowers the opposite direction. I am not so sure about the stripes and stuff. I know that whimsical can be CUTE but, this is a surprise wedding and you want things to be simple and beautiful at the same time. BUT if it's getting photographed in the local paper you may want to do some hanging crystals from the top. Like Duff does! LOL Make this look GRAND but, not cute...Just my opinion!

I saw this design the other day and loved it! Cute and whimsical but not too difficult. Would be very nice with different shades of purple and white.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread but I have a question for step0nmi and dinas27.
How do you get the picture address in your post
There was a picture I wanted to show the original poster but I can't figure out how to do it.
Can someone tell me?
Thanks,
Jibbies
