I am doing several Christmas cakes this year and I wanted to do bows. I have worked with fondant several times, but I really don't like the way it gets really hard, and is hard to work with if you make the decorations in advance. I have seen several cakes that use gumpaste instead. Which is easier to work with? I want to make the bows several days in advance. Any opinions? Thanks. icon_biggrin.gif

Gumpaste can be rolled thinner and dries quicker and harder.

Fondant takes longer to dry, and can still stay soft enough to eat (should someone want to)

A 50/50 combination is often good for items that need time to style or shape, but still dry hard to hold their shape.

I'm a little confused I guess, is your concern that it gets too hard? Because gum paste too will get hard after you make the bow. It's not going to be any easier to work with after it's dry then fondant is. What are you exactly wanting the bow to do? No one should really eat the bows, so I think that if they are hard, it shouldn't matter. If people are eating bows, maybe you can make them out of chocolate (pm me if you're interested) and that way they can eat them as well.
