Hi Everyone,

I need to make a Canadian themed cake this weekend. I am going to cover my cake in white fondant and have red maple leaf accents.

I have never worked with fondant before so this is going to be an experience in itself.

My questions:
a) how thick does the fondant need to be when rolled out, so that I can use my cookie cutter (maple leafs) to cut out the shapes? I am going to paint them with red edible glitter.
b) how much in advance should I make the shapes so they dry? I plan on assembling the cake on Friday/Saturday
c) If I wanted 'thicker/ more 3D shapes" would it be easiest to bake maple leaf shaped sugar cookies and cover them with red icing?

Thanks in Advance icon_smile.gif

If you haven't used fondant before, you might want to practice a bit. It can be tricky getting the fondant smooth on the lower edges. If you fold or crease it, you cannot smooth it out again.

Fondant is best about 1/4 inch thick on the cake. for cutouts, the thicker it is, the longer it will take to dry.

As for the decorations, you can make them anytime. If you want to paint on fondant, it would be best to use alcohol for the liquid because it evaporates quickly. The fondant melts easily. Vodka, lemon extract or clear vanilla can also work.
