Does anyone have any advise on how to make red icing? I have used Wiltons red red, no taste red, and Christmas red. They all turn out pink
.
I HATE RED ICING and seem to use alot of it. I buy it already made from my local cake supply store (same with the black!) then add my icing to it and it I have to add a bit of red color to it I do-that way I have more and it lasts longer. I wish I could help ou other than that! I am sure there are alot of words of wisdom coming your way though!
Americolor is supposedly the best when it comes to red and black, I personally have never tried them but definitely will if I ever have to make red again. I made an Elmo cake a few months ago and the only thing I can tell you is that you are going to use A LOT of the wilton shades of red. I just kept adding it until I got the color pretty close to what I wanted and then I let it sit over night, it seemed to darken a bit. HTH and Good luck!

I now only use Americolor for red and black royal icing. It's UNBELIEVABLE how vivid they are with just a few drops.
Are you trying to make buttercream? I haven't done that in red or black yet, but I'm confident it is the only brand that seems to get close enough.
I have tried using buttercream and royal icing. I just can't get it. Is Americolor available in craft stores?
i use no taste red and christmas red plus i add alittle juice from the m. cherries.. or i add alittle black and that helps too
I read a tip somewhere on here that you start with a dark pink icing, then add your red. I tried this and it was the best red color I have gotten so far. I used a pink that i had on hand then started adding red, it worked a lot better and faster.
Hope this helps.
Hey Tina,
I found a Red Powder at my local supply store and it really makes a Beautiful Red color.before I found the powder I had a time getting the red to be red not Pink PINK... hehehe. I make a base with Wiltons Red Red then just add some red powder to it or you can use it alone.
Check out My Elmo cake he is about as Red as you can get =0)
Good Luck!

I love the Elmo cake. Today I tried making the pink and then adding red. It worked out okay, but I would still like a better red. I'll have to look for the red powder this week. What is it called?

start off with chocolate bc. it dosent have to be dark chocolate but dark enough to be brown. then add a little of the wilton paste color at atime. you will have red soo. i do it this way all the time. it also gives it a chocolate taste as opposed to the plain bc. hope this helps. ![]()
