How To Explain My Choice To A Coworker?

I love making cookies, but I really just started doing them a couple of months ago. I made some cookie bouquets for some co-workers for their birthdays. Another co-worker requested one for her daughter and insisted on paying for at least my materials. This same co-worker approached me today and asked me if I could make 29 football cookies for her daughter's cheer squad to give to the football players for Homecoming. They would be personalized w/ the players' names and numbers. No problem, I think.

Of course, there is. My football cookie cutter is "too small." AND, she wants these done and delivered to her Wed because the girls need to give them on Thursday. AHHH! Since she is going to pay me (pretty well) and is always giving my name to her friends, I agree. But, I still don't have a big cookie cutter! A friend helps me find a nice shaped football clip art and we blow it up to the size she wants- about 5-6 inches long. I rush home, start making cookie dough and try to use the template and a sharp knife to cut them out. No luck! The dough just wasn't cooperating. On top of that, the treat bags I have are too small for that size cookie.

Unable to reach her, I finally made a choice- I'll make double the amount of smaller cookies and each player will get two- 1 with their name, 1 with their number, still in treat bag and tied with ribbon etc. So, how do I explain this not working out to her? I suppose she'll probably understand, being last minute and all. And I made her a sample with her name and a #1. (Can't hurt to suck up).

Do you think I made the right choice? I think the cookie still look good and hopefully when she sees them packaged together she will agree.

Whew! I feel WAY better now! Thanks CC buddies for listening!

I've had to call a customer and say that what I thought I could do just wasn't working out. She was very okay with it and trusted my opinion. I think you should just say that, that you thought you had a way to make a bigger cookie, but it didn't work out, so here is what I did..... I don't see why she wouldn't be okay with it, but you never know, but definitely call her beforehand.

Pick up one of those make your own cutter kits to have on hand if this situation comes up in the future. icon_smile.gif

Hey Becky.I think you are going about it the right way. It's not like the last minute you told her that it is not going to work out as planned and leaving her high and dry without cookies. You took matters in your hands and are doing the best with what you have.
Let us know how it went.

Personally, I would rather have two smaller cookies than one big one. You went with what was going to look nice. If you saved one of the rejects, you could show her why you decided to go with what you did. Seeing is believing!

I have another suggestion, if you have a large egg shaped or large round cutter. Just bend them to the football shape. I did the same thing with the large egg shape cutter in order to make the ears for my bunny cookie bouquet.

just a thought.

Yes, I agree with everyone. Also let her know that the bags were not big enough... icon_smile.gif

I would be thrilled with the outcome if I were your customer! She's still getting what she wanted....a cookie with name/number....just happens they're getting two! You made a good decision and I think you have nothing to worry about! She will understand!

Becky,
I think you made the right decision - you gave her what she wanted, just in a different way. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm sure she will appreciate your judgment. You didn't leave her high and dry, you just improved on her plan. icon_lol.gif

I've had this happen lots of times and the person is never mad. Just tell her you can't do what she had originally asked, the fact that you have a great back up plan will make her happy. This is not a problem!

You guys all made me feel so much better- and in the long run, everything DID turn out fine. She thought the cookies looked great and said everyone else at the game did too.

I did have another problem while decorating though- the tip I was going to use to write the names sort of got eaten by the garbage disposal right before I started! haha. I've lost so many couplers to that darn disposal, but that was my first tip- and the one I needed of course! I thought the names were a little off because I had to use a bigger size, but they still looked alright.

Now, can you believe I didn't even remember to take a pic of them after all of that???? Stupid me! haha

Say Angelgirl, was so glad to hear things worked out for you and that your customer/coworker was happy.

I have a suggestion for your treat bags. I often find supplies like bags at the floral supply stores. They're a bit larger and sometimes even prettier HTH

I lost a bunch of tips to the disposal when I first started decorating. Then I bought one of those covers for the drain, looks like a little sieve. I've seen all sorts of them in stores. I leave it there all the time, and remove it only when I want to put something down the disposal. I haven't lost a tip since.
