OMG! I could cry!
I made myself a bday cake yesterday and finished decorating it, and left it at work. overnight we had heavy rain, and it leaked through the ceiling and straight onto my cake!!!! icon_mad.gif
Now it's all sticky down one side and has splatters all over it. is there anything I can do to fix it?
My first thought was to dust some powdered sugar onto the sticky area. but that would probably make it worse hey?

Please help. it's my bday tomorrow and I don't want my cake to be a disaster!

Well seeing as it was a leak from the ceiling my first concern would be that the water would be dirty. As for fixing it well the only thing I could think of is scraping off the bad parts and redoing it but personally I would ditch it I make another.

icon_surprised.gif Sorry about your cake, but I would be concerned with water that leaked through the roof. You wouldn't want people getting sick, you don't what the water passed through before it went through the roof. Asbestos maybe? I'd say..buy yourself a cake and you will at least have a funny story to tell. Or make your employers buy you a cake since they're faulty roof is what caused your hard work to get ruined. tapedshut.gif Don't eat the cake!

Ditto that- I would not want to eat whatever seeped through the ceiling onto your cake. I don't think I could stomach just scraping off the icing either...who knows what kind of industrial chemicals came in with the water?!

That said I am soo sorry that your birthday cake was ruined by the storm icon_sad.gif. Make yourself a bigger one to make up for it icon_wink.gif. Really, that is awful and I'm sorry it happened to you.

I run a cafe in the CBD of the town I live in and so I do all my cake work there as my kitchen at home is tiny, and it helps to have commercial equipment to work with.
We had asbestos readings done on the building last year and they came back clear so there is no chance of that getting onto the cake. it's not dirty at all....just sticky.
I brused some powdered icing onto it, and it's not sticky anymore but you can still see the water marks.
I don't have time to make another cake and I'm working ALL day and have to go to dinner tonight.
It's only the bottom tier, so I may just re-ice it and see how I go. I don't really care if It doesn't get eaten. lol it's just kinda a special bday for me (quarter of a century :p) so I thought I'd make something special. but everything seems to be going wrong. lol
we had a MASSIVE fire in the CBD on saturday and one of our major shopping area's burned down, so the whole city is on shut down.
Happy birthday huh? hahaha

thanks for all your help.

I think the concern for the 'dirt' is not anything that would be visible, although that would be an obvious issue. Asbestos or not, if raing came inside, it had to travel over stuff that was outside first. I would not want to pour a coke down my roof, catch it in a cup, then drink it. That is in essence what happened to one side of your cake. The other thing you won't know without getting into the cake is if the water in any way made it soggy. Even if the rain came direct from heaven to your cake, it may be mushy inside.

What a crummy thing to happen to your birthday cake. I hope it works out ok and you have a great day despite that cake! icon_smile.gif

That is why, when I leave a cake out....I always put an umbrella over it. Sorry, I laughed at your expense. I know it isn't funny. It is just, what are the odds of this happening.
Don't think I would eat the cake either. Can't you just whip out something to have to eat and ice the top smooth and maybe write, Happy Birthday from Murphy. It would be a birthday cake you would remember.
I really do feel bad for you.

after re-reading what I wrote, I wasn't exactly clear. The cake only got "splashed" so it wasn't a total disaster, I'm just a drama queen. hahaha icon_redface.gif
I ended up just recovering the cake quickly and it was fine, there was no inside damage, and it went down a treat at my bday dinner. icon_smile.gif
I'll post pictures later today.

thanks for all your help tho.

Goodness... I hope all turned out well. We had the same thing happen at work and I lost a few new PC's as a result... I think the cake would hurt worse. icon_sad.gif

Hope your birthday went well. Best wishes... birthday.gif
