This is such a silly question...all of the cakes I have done so far are just practice/giveaway to family and friends so I just put the cake on a large plain white cake circle and hand it off. Let's pretend I was trying to put the cake on a lovely covered cake board. Will I have a cake circle or square for that matter (cut to the size of my bottom layer) in between the covered cake board and my bottom cake layer or do I just put the bottom cake right on the covered cake board and decorate from there? Hope I am not too confusing, thanks!
I decorate my cakes directly on the covered cake board. I cut strips of wax paper and tuck them under all around the cake. After I'm done, I just pull the strips out and throw away. Very easy and it works!
