About a potential customer that is. This woman (the mom) called earlier this week about a wedding cake for THIS November for her daughter. There is a bit of a language barrier, it seems, so I have had some trouble understanding her on the phone. I told her I work out of my home, that I don't have a storefront, and that I don't just have cakes lieing around. I've told her that, at least, twice. We have an appt. tonight for a consultation and I just received an email from her asking if I could bring 3 different cakes to sample. Uh, NO! I told her the last time we spoke that I would already be making a cake next weekend and that I would be sure to save some for her to taste.

Next, I have no clue what the heck the daughter wants. The moms calls it a Tiffany cake, and I really think she means Topsy Turvy, but she claims the daughter also wants a square cake on the bottom followed by a round, then a square, etc. PLUS, they want a groom's cake shaped like a firetruck, 3D.

I tried to scare the mom off with my base prices, but she didn't seem bothered by them. I just don't have a good feeling about this and want to back out, but I don't know how! It's not that I couldn't use the money but I honestly don't know if it's worth the hassle!

I understand the bad feeling. Take a breath and meet the woman. You never know, it might work out well. If you still have that bad feeling after the meeting, you can find some reason to back down at that point. I hope it works out...

I'm not sure if it's good news or bad news, but she's not the only one like that. Had one lady who wanted to come over and see what I have in stock. I told her I didn't operate that way .... I dont' have cakes and food sitting around .... I'm not a restaurant .... I'm not a bakery .... consultations were by appointment only.

She asked "Can I come over today then?" I said, "As I said, I am not a restaurant ... I am not a bakery. I do NOT have food just sitting around waiting for people to come over and sample it. We will have to set an appointment sometime next week."

Charge her for every little thing. I'm sure you'll need to cover that PITA factor! icon_lol.gif

Meet her and see how the meeting goes and then decide. It could be the language barrier is making it hard to conversate over the phone.

I bet the cakes she wants is the Tiffany's box cakes with a round. They have pics of it in the gallery. It could just be the language barrier causing issues too. My MIL and FIL are from other countries and it took me a little bit (okay, about a good 2 years or more) to get to completly understand them. sometimes my MIL still throws me for a loop with her english. You can always say no if necessary to the order.

Well, after a meeting with the mom, numerous phone calls and emails and lots of time on my part, I just found out that the groom's parents decided to order the wedding cake from the caterers. WHEW! Good lluck getting them to make a firetruck for the groom! I will miss the money, but not the hassle!
