I have a wedding cake for tomorrow that will have Monograms on the top tier. Large middle initial with smaller initials on either side of it.

The "legs" on the large initial are so long they're going to keep that initial bottom about 1/2" to 3/4" off the top of the cake. The bride wanted them flush with the cake top and did not want flowers on the top tier (they would hide the gap). I'm leary of cutting the legs on these as they were very expensive. Would you cut them - leave the gap or add a flower to hide the space?

I don't want to freak out the bride the day before her big day!

Thanks for any input or suggestions!
Debbie

Would it be possible to bake a small, thin cake to make a "platform" on top of the top tier? It would add a little more detail to the cake but not affect the total design.

If it's wire, just bend them up and the bride can bend them back if she wants them that long, or she'll just cut them herself.

How about doing an icing swirl (like on a cupcake) exactly where you will poke the "legs" in? No space, no flowers, and a nice easy platform for the monogram to sit on. They don't have to be large in diameter, just large enough for the legs to appear like they're resting on them.

Thanks for the suggestions! The legs aren't just wire - they're a good 1/16" thick and plated with finished ends.

The monograms are from www.cake-jewelry.com

You could use a piece of thick foam board as the base then stick the topper all the way down through. That way it would be flush on top. After looking at the site, I would NOT cut it. If the foam doen't work, I'd bake a thin layer and add on top as someone else suggested. thumbs_up.gif

I'm not sure if it's been suggested yet (reading too fast), but you could make a slightly shorter top tier and a thicker cake board, like foam core or something similar. That way you top tier stays the same height as the others, and the plated ends of your topper has something stronger to go into. The guests would still be able to cut into the cake after removing the monogram and not have anything else to remove from the top.

I always cut these down, but I do ask the bride first. I have yet to have someone deny me. I can't think of a future use they may have for them that would be affected by a slightly shorter leg. My suggestion: call to confirm then cut away!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I ended up cutting them down this morning to a little over 3.5". I'm getting ready to post a picture of the cake. I probably won't hear from them for the next week so i'll let you know when I do.

Thanks again!
Debbie
