I have a cake I'm making for a b-day party of one of the little girl's I teach.
The bottom layer will be a 10" square, 2" tall torted and filled. On top of this will sit a 5" round, 4" tall, filled as well. I have the 5" on a cake board cut to the same size.

My question then is do I need to put dowels in to support the small round, or would it be light enough not to do damage. I will be assembling this afternoon and the party is tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks!!!

Laura

To be safe, I would use straw dowels. It will also add stability.

my rule of thumb is every 4" of cake have dowels and supports. Since your bottom one is 2" torted and your top is 4" tall I would put one under the 5" to be safe, expecially with the filling in the bottom tier, it will most likely squished it out otherwise and give you the dreaded buldge on the cake.

Thanks for the replies. I'm about to stack and will use thin dowels, as that's what I have on hand.

Thanks a bunch!
