If you can, order the Nick Lodge leaf cutters and vieners. They are fabulous. I make all my fall leaves with them (see pics in gallery). When I do fall leaves I start out with yellow/orange/red marbled fondant. Thin the edges & dry on crumpled foil to give them movement. After they are dry I use different colors of yellows, reds, and bronze to color them.
I made a Autumn wedding cake for my sister-in-law last year and decided to have leaves on the cake. I made them from sugarpaste (first time I ever used it) and found it pretty easy to work with. I just used cookie cutters that I already had then veined the leaves with the tip of a sharp knife and then I just squeezed the edges until they were paper thin. I also used aluminum foil to give the leaves movement. I painted the leaves with food coloring, they got a little gummy when I did this but I just left them alone to dry. I thought they turned out well.

WOW! I didn't know leaves could be made to look so real! Those are fantastic!
My first attempt at fall leaves were a little on the thick side (I used beige gumpaste and dried them on flower formers) http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_767583.html However, I loved the shimmer I got by using a bronze luster dust along with the greens, reds, yellows I also brushed on. Love those NL cutters and veiners--they just look so real!
