I torted, filled, and leveled tiers-OK. I waited several hours then crumbed coated-OK. I waited an hour then iced with bc and when I went to smooth , it had bulges and shadows icon_cry.gif It bulged where there is bc inside and I can see a shadow behind the icing. How do I fix this? I still have to put a fondant ribbon on bottom half and decorate with royal icing and paint like I did her shower cake. Help anyone?

I always push down on each layer after a torte to push the filling out. Also, use a thin layer of icing when torting.

At this point, the only thing I know to do is to press down on the cake gently with some waxed paper if the filling was to thick, and take your spatula and get the excess bulges and reice.

There was a thin layer of bc inside. It didn't bulge til after I iced it. The chocolate fudge icing didn't bulge. Is the bc too thin maybe?

Yes that can happen if it is to thin. It needes to be a medium-thick.

yes - what abeverly said. I have that happen sometimes too when I ice and take too much off trying to smooth it.

Your icing looks too thin. Put a thicker layer on and it should help.

If you make your icing "dam" (ring around the filling) thicker next time, it won't bulge. For now, I would do another layer of bc on the outside, it def looks too thin. Good luck!!! Great smoothing job, btw!

I agree with the post above. You icing is a little to thin b/c I can see the cake layers through a couple of spots. So you might want to put another layer on.

Now if you have a good layer of a crusting buttercream on and you have already smoothed it but come back to find that there is a little buldge... well hello Melvira Method!! this has saved me a few times. Just use the roller and roll on over it to smooth it out, it helps to move the icing around so the bulge is blended in.
