Would I mix a little bit of black to brown to get a dark brown?

Yes, just a little at a time to get the right shade.

Whenever I've mixed black into brown, I wound up with a puky green color. Totally unusable. Didn't matter what brand of black I used.

I would recommend letting your brown icing rest for a few hours or overnight, then add more brown color, if necessary.

Just start with a dark rich chocolate buttercream, and it takes a small amount of black to get a good deep black.

The chocolate also masks the bitterness of the black coloring.
