I baked two layers of chocolate fudge cake (recipe from CC & very good!!). I was thinking of making a chocolate mint ganache for the filling and also had the idea of using crushed Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies between the layers as well. Then covering in chocolate MMF with a FBCT on top.

Please let me know what you think of this, or how it sounds, as it's experimental. Thanks.

I can't think of anything better than chocolate and mint....unless it's MORE chocolate and MORE mints! Sounds like this experiment is a TRUE SUCCESS!!

Okay, so I made the cake, torted one of the two cakes, added my ganache between each layer and after grinding my Thin Mints I also put them on top of the ganache in the center. I've never made this before and found the recipe for the ganache online. Sounds easy enough - only four ingredients. Bittersweet Choc.; check. Heavy cream; check. Room temp. butter; checkeroonie. And Mint leaves....hmmm, oh yeah, the mint plant. I'll pick them fresh. (Oh, I also added just a touch of some chocolate mint liqueor too.) Didn't have as many leaves as the recipe called for so I figured it would be very mild in the mint department.

Dear hubby comes home and I let him taste it and he says he can't taste the mint. I'm like, I know it's not a lot, but I can certainly taste it. Oh well.

Later he's watering the plants and mentions that he really want to water the basil because it looks like it dying. I say "well that's because I picked so many leaves". He just stares at me. So I'm like what. He says, "Basil". I'm like yeah. He says, "No wonder I couldn't taste the mint. I thought you added mint".

OMG! I can't believe what I did. After I picked my jaw up from the floor I couldn't stop laughing. DH said we won't tell anyone and see who notices. I still can't understand where my brain has gone off to. Oh well, it still tasted good to me. So I guess the new flavor is chocolate fudge cake with chocolate basil ganache. lol

Can you say "DINGBAT"?!!!

that is awesome!!! it sounds like something i would do!!! or my mom, when after a day of playing in the hot sun me and my friends and cousins sit down to the table to drink lemonade sweetened with 2 cups of salt, instead of sugar!!! it's great that it didn't taste bad though, it's just you couldn't taste the mint.... thumbs_up.gif

yeah, this is right up there with posting my dumb question the other day when I wanted to know what it meant to "ream" the shortening. After the post I realized it was a typo!

heya sugar...
when you make your fondant, why don't you add some lorran's spearmint oil to it. Make the fondant mint flavored as well.
