Ok everyone. Have a few questions for you all.

1. Garland or Not?

2. Icicles or Not?

3. Colored lights or White?

We have a disagreement in our house. One wants one and not the other etc. I think I am ready to do something different this year. Just thought I would get everyones' opinions. Posting pictures would be great too. Gonna have to go find one of mine and I'll add it.

Thanks for any suggestions!

In our house we have four different trees. We have the real one that my hubby decorates with my decorations. And then each of the three children have their own small, fake tree to decorate any way they want. This works great for us because the kids never could agree on anything so now we all get to do our own thing. The kids love it!

1. On the big tree we use ribbon instead of garland.
2. NO icicles!!! I spend the next year getting them out of my carpet and they are heck on the vacuum cleaner.
3. White lights for me. The kids love the colored though!

At my house We have one big (real) tree ( though this year their thinking about doing a fake one) And all the children have thier own tabletop (fake) tree to decorate in their rooms. The big tree has white and colored lights, popcorn strings, and beads. Is "icicles" tinsel? icon_redface.gif if so no, we don't have them either for the same reason as desireed. icon_lol.gif

We always get a real tree but never have tinsel or a garland. I have enough problems wrapping the lights (multicolored) around the tree, I hate to think of doing a garland too. But I love multicolored lights!

If you have pets you should NEVER use tinsel. If they eat any of it the strands can knot up in their stomach and will require surgical removal. I suppose the same could go for little kids too icon_biggrin.gif

Man...this is a great thread.
I pretty much gave up fighting dh on what he wants.
We only have one tree...it's real...we cut it down on our property. (we have 15 acres..always a tree we can cut)
Yes, to Garland.
Yes, to Icicles.
Yes, to coloured lights.

If I had my way.
It would be no to garland. No to icicles. Many many...of one coloured light...and then one or 2 complimenting coloured ornaments. But...my tree always ends up looking good without my way.... icon_confused.gif So, it's not worth the arguement. icon_smile.gificon_biggrin.gif

No, yes, and yes. No garland, I'd get rid of the icicles if I could, but the kids love to hang them and we have both white lights and blue lights on the tree. We also have ornaments from when I was a kid, and ones I bought for a "Disney" themed tree - the theme went out the window as soon as we had kids icon_smile.gif. I also used to throw away broken ornaments, back when I still thought I should have a beautiful tree - but then a girlfriend of mine told me about how she still had her homemade ornaments she made with her kids back when she was a single mom with no money - and how even the broken ones hold wonderful memories. So the broken ones go up now icon_smile.gif.

No garland, no tinsel and white lights.
Every year our tree has more ornaments, for the first couple years it had a pitiful amount. I don't like buying sets of ornaments so it's a slow process but each ornament is special this way. My husband doesn't have any from when he was a kid but my mom kept seperate ones for each of us kids so I have some really sad ornaments that I love. I buy my kids each one ornament a year, the oldest gets a snowman and the little one gets a Santa.

We don't agree about the tree, my husband wants just lights but it's not the same without the mismatched ornaments.

Great ideas everyone!! You all have a lot of them! I really like the ribbon one. may have to try that. I used to love the tinsel because we always had it on our trees when I was a kid but I hate sweeping it up!! I put up the ornaments from when I was a kid and all of the ornaments that the kids make. Santa always brings an ornament for each child.

The idea of them decorating their own tree is a pretty good one too!

I always thought it would be a neat to have a theme tree, either by color or santas or something but just can't give up the handmade ornaments. Oh well.

Keep 'em coming!!

Yep, he wouldn't yell if I wanted a matched tree either but he just likes the lights, he likes simple he says. icon_rolleyes.gif He does have 2 ornaments now that mean alot to him, they're Snap-on tool boxes and he would probably put just those two up if given the choice.

fake tree WITH white lights already attached! how lazy are we? icon_lol.gif
my husband picked it up last year when i was pregnant and couldn't care less what he got! LOL

decorative wire ribbon for garland
NO icicles
white lights (but now i wish they weren't attached because we have an 8 month old and i would love to have colored lights for her)

i use a wired ribbon to make a gigantic bow for on top of the tree. gotta love the bow maker! thumbs_up.gif that suckah comes in handy around the holidays!

all of my ornaments are jewel tones and gold. i use a few different ribbons that all coordinate in burgundy and gold. i'm thinking of changing it up this year though. we'll see.... icon_biggrin.gif

There are two different ways I decorate my FAKE tree...lol.

One is with colors burgundy & gold..... curled ribbon around tree like garland would be, white lights, no icicles...everything burgundy or gold only.

Second is blue & silver, white lights, only blue & silver ornaments and I'm sure I have some silver ribbon or something, but NO garland....my mother was always garland & colored light crazy, so thats probably why I'm not.

Maybe we could post links to our christmas trees after we get them up this year.

My husband likes the simple but elegant look. So on our "fake" tree which I wish was real but he doesnt like the fact of buying something just so we can throw it away. So we have a HUGE fake tree that we put icicles Sp on and then we have gold silver and white ornaments and just white lights. It really looks nice and not too bright. Like some trees do. I know by the time I am a grandma our christmas tree will be the crazy one.

It's really fun hearing how everyone does their trees, some the same and some way different. I think the link idea would be great. I always think I would love to have a tree look like the ones in the magazines but then it usually ends up the same as last year lol.

We usaully have a fake tree but had a real one alst year. We aren't sure what we are doing this year. I used to decorate all santas and snowmen, but with two kids, we now have lots of homemade mismatched ornaments and I love it. White lights and beads instead of garland.
