I am a newbie to this site and have it VERY helpful with all you knowlegable people.

I am looking to start my own business in Minnesota. I have been doing cakes for a long time for family and friends for free, After much pressure form them all, I am thinking about taking the plunge!

I am looking for advice and steps involved in doing this venture from Minnesotans that have been there, done that. I am not competition. This is more of a hobby than anything else.

Pm me if you want. I would appreciate any help and advice.

Here is a link for Minnesota. It appears that you need a separate kitchen, but call to be sure. The link refers to 'food' and baking is often treated differently. Contact the MN department of agriculture. they would be the license office if home bakeries are permitted.

Thanks. I did go there and found some information that was helpful. I guess what I want to know is which do you do first...secure a facility to bake in or tax number or what to do first.

According the the department of health I would need to take a food managment class as well before they would even look at licensing.

How long does the applying for all the licenses and such take?

Sorry to be a pain but I am totally cluless here.

Get your tax number first - they ask for it when you get inspected.

No, you don't need the class first, they'll issue an order with your license that you have to take it within a certain time frame - mine was 45 days

I had a kitchen to rent and was fully licensed about 2 weeks after I decided that I should do cakes.

Hope that helps
