Is it a wedding or shower cake? Did the bride have any ideas as far as colors, does she want flowers?

They requested a sheet cake for a bridal shower. No particular colors, just a Hawaiian theme. They want basic white butter cream icing. I thought of palm trees and a beach scene, but I don't know how to make that. Can you buy little plastic palm trees or plastic leis?

You could just pipe the palm trees out of buttercream so they hare one the sides and the palms fan out at the top towards the middle of the cake.

I know you can get little palm trees. Not a whole lot of help because I can't remember where I've seen them.

I would use maybe a cookie stick like those u buy in the coffee dept. and use butter cream icing, ,stiff to make the palm leaves...I would also use brown sugar or crumbed cookies to make the sand.

When I went to hawaii....there big on COLORFUL FLOWERS!!! all kinds....you can use the ones we did in course II...and make them very bright! I hope this helps, Im new to cake decorating....

I'm having trouble pricing my cakes. If it is big enough to serve 40 people, for a luau decorated sheet cake, how much should I charge?

Is it all buttercream? Any fondant?? I was told to multiply my cost by 4 and that should be good. And by cost, I mean down to the last little thing you used in creating your cake, paper towels, % of electric/gas bill, soap, etc... HTH

My WMI had suggested a base price of $1/serving for birthday cakes, $2/serving for wedding cakes, plus additonal for fondant or extravagent decorations. This is in the Sacramento, CA area. Not sure what others charge, but just a ballpark.
As far as plastic decorations, I have found mini plastic palm trees at Wishing Well. (Don't know where you are located, if they have Wishing Well there, it's a party supply/carnival supply/wedding supply type place). Good luck, and don't forget to post a pic so we can see!

I use piping gel colored bluish/green for water and "brownulated" brown sugar for the sand. (Brownulated is a finer brown sugar and looks just like sand.) I have also read where other people used crushed graham crackers for the sand. Here is a picture of one of my beach cakes (not the best one but a good example. The water looks much better when icing underneath is either white or blue).
