Has any one had this happen to you? Made a wedding cake for some one who has never met you or seen your work?

I was contacted to make a wedding cake for the saturday after Thanksgiving. The grand-mother of the groom called, they had called everyone else and everyone else was busy and someone gave her my name (told me who - and I don't even know them)

Anyway I agreed to do the cake - simple two tiered to feed 50. Asked when could meet with the bride. She said she is out of town so I could do "whatever I wanted". So more questions, colors? flowers? etc. Answers - It didn't matter - but by the way the bride favorite color is deep purple. And any flowers - they just picked at a bunch of purple flowers for the bouquet.

I sent the bill to the groom's mother. Who called to tell me that the check has been mailed and give the time & place to set up.

It just seemed so strange that they didn't even want to see some of my work. Talk about having faith.

Of course I will do something extremely nice and elegant.

I made my first wedding cake for a lady I had never met. We spoke on the phone once or twice and she emailed a photo of the cake she wanted.

The reason she wanted me to make the cake was because she had tasted a piece of carrot cake that I made for a friend.

I met her at the church when I went to set up the cake. She was thrilled with the cake and that made me very happy.

So, it happens....Go for it, you'll do fine!!

To be honest when I got married I was the same way, I had a quickie "shotgun" wedding right after thanksgiving and the cake was the least of my worries. The only thing I spurged on was the dress and once that was done I was really flexible about the rest- to me it was just a piece of paper. I wouldn't worry too much and just do the best you can, I'm sure that you will give her more than she ever imagined and thats all she will be able to talk about the day after. ( I, BTW, bought a grocery store cake and it wasn't even like the picture I choose Oh well you get what you pay for right! icon_biggrin.gif LOL I wish I had known about this place back then I could have made something much better). Good luck and don't forget to show us your results!

This is common with out-of-town weddings. Have fun with it! What is the budget? You could do sooo many things!

If they haven't gone into specifics they aren't likely to be too picky. I'm sure they'll be thrilled with what ever you do.

I had a small, out of town, Saturday after Thanksgiving wedding too and really didn't care a bit about cake.

I'm sure you'll impress them!

Hey littlegrahamcracker!

So funny to read your post! As we speak, I am making a wedding cake for someone I have never met or spoken to. I was contacted by the grooms Aunt, who loves my cupcake trees, and asked to do a cake for 100 people. These were all the instuctions I got:

White cake, butter cake and chocolate cake{3 tiers}
No filling
No fondant covering the cake
All white with red roses
Nothing too fancy

That was it. I have been agonizing about this cake for a couple of weeks. I tried making fondant roses for the first time this week and didn't do too well! My wilton instructor never covered them in class, she just said to follow the instuctions in the book and you couldn't mess up! Boy, was she wrong! To top it all off. this is my very first wedding cake order. I have been going back and forth between crying and laughing all morning! What was I thinking!?!

I'm sure you will do fine! People who don't give specific instructions can't ever say you didn't do what they asked for!
I'm going back to my cake now. Thanks for listening, and if anyone has any kind words I could use them about now LOL.

I have done a few but I require a signed contract that states every single detail about the cake (the bulk of my business is weddings). They can mail or fax over the contract.

Glad to have company in the unseen customer club. Best of luck on your wedding cake be sure to post pics! As for the fondant roses can't be of any help for you - I've never had any fondant classes. I do make gum paste roses though - and will never go back to buttercream or royal icing roses. They may take longer to make but boy do they look so much better.

Thanks pluto6210 for the compliments! icon_lol.gif

I've decided to use gum paste roses, carnations, stephonis (sp?) and verigated ivy. Flowers will be white and shades of purple.

Just hope this will get me some more business.

Sounds like it going to be gorgeous. And yes, out of towners or customers you never meet may be wierd but it beats the people constantly all but handing over your shoulder and changing their minds every 10 minutes. Best of luck to you!!

I often do cakes for people via email or phone. Sometimes they are willing to drive to pickup the cake (better yet get delivery) but as long as they are happy doing plans without meeting you in person, no problems!

I'm kind of shy in a way around people I don't know so this doesn't bother me one bit.

Your gumpaste flowers are beautiful!! I wish I could take a class to learn how to do them. I haven't been brave enough to post any of my pictures. You are all so talented!

I can't wait to see what you come up with, and Thank You for the encouraging words!

Most of my business is from people I've never met, actually! icon_smile.gif

I work with a cabin catering business here in the mountains. So, if I get a request for a cake, I just do it and deliver! icon_biggrin.gif

People are always so amazed that they can be 500 miles from home and have a custom dessert made just for them. I prefer to do this sometimes, because (as was stated above) some brides are so overwhelmed with details, they can make your life crazy!! icon_cool.gif

You do beautiful work, and I'm sure this cake will be just as amazing!!

Happens to me all the time, as I live at the beach & many of my weddings are from out of towners!
