Does anyone know how to remove rust from flower nails and decorating tips? I left them soaking overnight in a vinegar solution (to remove the grease). Now they have rust spots! icon_cry.gif

Thanks in advance for the responses.!

Throw them away and buy more. The acetic acid (vinegar) is very strong and soaking them for long periods causes corrosion.

Chunk 'em and chalk it up to a lesson learned. icon_smile.gif

I hate to tell you but I agree, throw them away . Next time just soak them in warm water and wash them right away. I also make sure that I dry mine with a paper towel inside and out.

I agree, I did it once and I tried to use the household rust removers on the market. BLAH! Nothing doing, doesn't work. Its not worth the extra stress, they're relatively cheap by comparison

I've read that rubbing a piece of cut potato takes rust off of baking tins. It's worth the try.

Thanks for the responses! Trust me, I will not be soaking in vinegar solution again...however, I just tried rubbing them with regular nail polisher remover, then rinsed in hot soap water....and guess what? It Worked! icon_biggrin.gif

I've had some luck with baking soda and my little tip cleaning brush, but, overall, I've thrown out more than I've salvaged. It's just not worth the work.

Wilton does suggest that you not soak or use vinager on your tips because it can remove the finish on them.

They are nickle plated, so they should not rust. I have had them discolor if you leave them soaking in water for periods of times or wash them in the dishwasher with certain soaps.

If they are just discolored there is no reason not to use them. They just aren't shiny and pretty any more.

True, there is a difference between discolored and rusty. Many of my Wilton tips are discolored, but they hardly ever rust - and if they do, it comes off easily. Ateco tips will rust if you look at them crossways.
