I'm doing a Star Wars cake for tomorrow. The only request was that it have a Clone Trooper from Episode III on it. I found these two images (hope this works):

What would be the best way to do either of these, which do you all think would be the best image to do? Buttercream drawing? Cut out in fondant and pieced together? It's only a 1/4 sheet cake, so I don't have a lot of room to work with. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!

What about a chocolate transfer or fbct?

IMHO I think the first one done as fondant cutouts would look cool! You could also do an edible image if you have access to somewhere that does them.

I did a cake similar to what you are doing except it was a different character. I did an edible image for mine and the bday boy and his family loved it. You can see it in my pics if you want to get an idea of a 1/4 sheet done this way.

I totally agree...the first one in fondant cutouts. Try and use some buttercream to "puff it up" and give it depth, like in the legs, etc? If you don't want to go that route, I would do a chocolate or buttercream transfer.

I think the edible image idea is out the window, because I don't have an edible image printer and WalMart isn't legally allowed to print them and sell them since it's a copyrighted/licensed character. I'm thinking the fondant cutouts would be the way to go. I think it would be quicker and easier in the long run rather than doing a transfer or tracing the image in buttercream. Oooh, I could even do some orange/red/yellow marbled fondant for the part behind Vader's eyes. I just need to find the easiest, quickest way to do this and still look good as I also have to make my mom's cake for Sunday and I'm still kinda slow at this. Add in going to my son's soccer game tonight, attending a birthday party for 2 hours tomorrow (for the Star Wars birthday boy), and spending the rest of tomorrow night at a horse show! So I'll have very little time to get my mom's cake done and I always seem to shortchange my family and really don't want to do that. Anyway, thanks for the ideas!!! Any other tips/suggestions still welcome!!!

I know they are not supposed to print them, but I can tell you my Safeway does it for me all the time. Have you tried?

Well, I haven't tried with this one, but I had one printed for a Halo cake I did a couple of months ago and the girl that printed it didn't know what it was, then another girl saw it and told her she wasn't supposed to print it. They gave it to me anyway, but said in the future, they can't print any licensed character pictures. I figured Star Wars is so well-known that no one would print it.
