One More Quick Question. (Doweling) Thanks Guys :-)

I have only done 3 tiered cakes, and one four tier with pillars. The cake for tomorrow, is 4 tier stacked. My husband seems to think that the long dowel that goes in the top to secure all the cakes together, needs to be thicker than the standard dowel rods we use in each tier. He may be right, but I am worried about it taking away too much cake. What is the thickness of the dowel you used to secure all 4 cakes together. (cakes are square 14", 12", 8", 6") Thanks again everyone.
the pencil sized ones are 1/4" dowels, that's what I use too and I've never had a problem...heck there are some people that use drinking straws!!!!!!!! Those dowels are strong enough......besides you're goin to put several in each cake....it's not just ONE stick holding all that cake up
