I hope it's okay to post this picture here. I had a bride to ask me to make the following cake. I'm sorry I don't know where the picture came from but she emailed it to me as one of the options she's thinking of. I'm thinking that it would have to be fondant an possibly either painted or airbrushed that golden color? I'm not so much worried about the piping as I am about getting that color. Help! Thanks guys, I know you'll come through for me!
That's a beautiful cake! Ok, it looks like fondant and I think the gold is airbrushed. It would take a lot of coats to get it that perfect. I think I seen an impression mat in a similar pattern. Maybe you can use that then pipe in with bc. I don't know just a thought. I'll be back let me try to find the website.
Do they have chocolate transfer sheets in that color? I can't imagine how much gold luster you would have to use to get an entire wedding cake that color. It would cost a fortune! I'm wondering if it could be "wrapped" with something else...probably not. It's pretty shiny!!
actually ya know...if she colors the fondant a gold color and uses a lustre/pearl dust mix it wouldn't take that much, but getting it even is a trick....in fact I'm leaning more towards a ivory fondant so the gold doesn't come out so Goldy I guess I should say LOL

You might want to try this http://www.pastrychef.com/LUSTER-COLOR-SPRAYS_p_7-770.html
Thanks guys! I thought it would have to be airbrushed. I don't have one yet but I've been thinking of getting one and this would be exactly the excuse that I need! But yeah, I am concerned about matching the color and getting that golden hue. The bride says her dress is also golden. Wouldn't want them to clash. I guess if she decides to definitely go with this one, I should get a swatch from her?
Has anyone ever tried the creative color, luster colors that Diane suggested? Thanks for the link Diane!
I saw a site the other day that carried gold, silver and pearl airbursh color (like luster dust) but I don't remember the name of it. I'll look when I get home tonight and post it here. I think it was $16.95/2 oz bottle but would be so much easier then trying to mix with vodka and get the same mix every time.
I did a google search and here's the site http://www.kitchenkrafts.com/product.asp?pn=CD3400-GLD&cn=900100 I've never used it but might be worth a sht.
I definitely will if she chooses this cake. She sent me lots of pictures of things she likes. She wants to take pieces and parts and design her own. Everyone else has brought me a picture of exactly what they wanted. That'll be my first time for that so wish me luck! I'll be meeting with her next Sunday.

It does not look shiny enough to be gold leafing.
I am going to go out on a limb and say chocolate fondant that has been airbrushed gold. It just has that dull sheen to it.
