I'm so totally confused!! How the hell do you cut a whimsy/topsy turvy cake? Anyone willing to do a tutorial?
Yummy....there is already a how to on the whimsical cake. From what I've heard it's pretty easy to follow.

i was just going to do a follow up on my nightmare topsy turvy cake. two things i've been told by a few people, REFRIGERATE! the other has to do with the support system. Use the (wilton) hidden pillars or something similar. wood dowels are just not strong enough, at least this is what i gather from the people i've talked to.
my own experience is make sure the top tier is NOT strawberry! its a very dense cake, and weighs alot more than i thought it would!
putting it together wasn't difficult, it was it's little hidden secrets once stacked that brought me almost to tears!

From this 2 links my suggestion would be the second one is more stable..I don't think is necesary to put plates in between..Dowel rods is enough..And when you are done a dowel rod along all the cakes will make them stable..
I just bake and decorate the cake once she's paid for and out the door it's someone else's problem...LOL (I did a stand up pooh bear for my sister and my mom was mad when I wouldn't help her cut it...I couldn't watch her stab at my Pooh...LOL) Seriously though, I'm with Duff on this one I HATE cutting my cakes, makes me sad.
I just want to be able to let people that get these cakes know how to cut after it leaves me. If I'm every at a event and I made the topsy turvy cake for it, I the cake baker/decorator wouldn't even know how! Now how can everyone ooh and aah over what I did( and people will be curious to see how it's being cut) and I'm sitting there stuck on stupid ( I really don't have to be, I could just start cutting; but do I remove the top tier first and how?) Then with the hole in the middle, I'm not a complete idiot, I'm not saying it looks complicated it just looks awkwad compared to cutting a regular cake.
I was the one to cut into the topsy turvy I made for my sister's shower.. I served it up like any other cake making sure the the slices cut from the shorter end were a little thicker than the ones cut fron the taller end. Once you get the first cuts made it's pretty easy.
You could also bake "regular" shaped cakes and stack them with styrofoam wedges in between. (Take a cake dummy and cut it in half on an angle) It would still be whimsical and a no-brainer to cut and serve. It would look something like this:
