After seeing a post from "getfrosted" wanting ideas for ice cubes in a ice bucket, it had me thinking about a Christmas Cake I had in mind. I didn't get around to it until today to see what I could come up with. I made a hard candy recipe, flavored it with a clear lorann oil. I made a rectangular shaped mold out of heavy duty aluminum foil, approx. nine inces long, 5 inches wide and about an inch high. Oiled the foil and poured the hot candy, after about 15 minutes score the candy (I used a pizza cutter) into ice cubes, about 1 inch x 1 inch. after it cooled completely I just broke the cubes along the scored lines. I wrapped the cubes in wax paper and put in a ziplock bag. Made about 40 cubes. the left over hot candy was poured on a oiled piece of foil, while still pliable I cut some strips and twisted like icesicles. The other thin puddles of of hard candy will be my "ice skating pond" placed on top of blue piping gel. I am a newbie and just do cakes for fun for family and friends. I am soooo glad I stumbled across this web site..I am learning tremendous tips on how to do stuff I never would have thought of....and yes I am so addicted!

Now that is creativity! Great idea and isn't sugar fun to play with? You can do so much with it. I took Ewald Notters pulled and blown sugar class in 2000 and loved it. Unfortunately people in my area aren't willing to pay the price for this type of work. But what you created would go over with anyone and you might not have to charge an arm and a leg for it either. I have a feeling you are going to be getting lots of orders for this type of work when they see this cake. Please post photos, I would love to see it.
I've been waiting for someone to come up with an answer to getfrosted's problem. It sounds like you did it.
Can you possibly share your hard candy recipe/instructions. I'm also one whom does cakes for family members and close friends, and I've only worked with sugar about three times or so. I'd love to hear the ingredients you used in the candy so I can try it also.
Hard Candy Recipe:
2 cups white sugar
2/3 cup Karo
3/4 cup water
1/2 tsp. Lorann Oil (clear oil if you want clear cubes. I used cotton candy)
Mix sugar, karo and water, stir until sugar is disolved over medium heat, just until mix begins to boil. clip on candy therm. and do not stir mix after it begins to boil. The recipe recommends to use a wet pastry brush to wash away sugar crystals from side of pan. I didn't do that though. When candy therm. reaches 300 degrees remove from heat and add Lorann oil, stir with a metal spoon. If you want to color your hard candy, add your food color as well. Slowly pour into a oiled mold or on foil that has been oiled.
When I do my cake, I will post a pic. In meantime if anyone does the ice cubes I would love to your results.

really cool idea, thanks for the recipe. so if i wanted to do icicles on say a roof of a shed do i just let this candy cool until i can handle it with my hands and then shape into icicles?
I'm so happy that you came up with a solution to your cake problem from my of my problems! This place is great - gets your mind thinking (sometimes a little toooo much!!!).
Please share your recipes/instructions on how to do this in case another ice cube cake comes up! Make sure that you post pictures of the finished cake - sounds like it's going to be beautiful and very creative!
I ended up using clear mints for mine - lack of time, at midnight I wasn't about to try anything else for this one. I will post pictures after kids go to bed tonight.
wow that sounds so cool! I want to do some pulled sugar stuff but it seems like you have to buy a lot of equipment from what I read - what you described doesn't sound like you have to have a lot of tools to do it! Do you have pictures at all? ANd does anyone have a link to that original thread?
