Do I Have To Cover Cardboard Cake Circles
Decorating By LarissaEmily Updated 12 Sep 2007 , 11:08pm by LarissaEmily
It is necessary or only optional to cover cardboard cake circles? The "how to stack" videos I have found links for on CC don't show them using covered cardboard, just plain old uncovered cake circles.
Does it depend on how long you have your cakes on the boards?
I plan on using boxed cake mix if that is of any importance.
Thanks for any advice.

Many cake circles are waxed and would not necessarily require covering. However the regular boards will start absorbing moisture almost right away.
If it is only a single tier, it would probably be ok, but more tiers, and the whole structure can be put at risk from soggy boards.
The last tiered cake I did I used press and seal. It was great. It is not to sticky and it worked well.
i will have a 6" cake stacked ontop of a 10". My concern about covering the board in anything like cling wrap is doesn't this cause a problem when it comes time to cut the cake?????
Well I cut the cake at the event and I had no issues with it.
You can cover your boards with decorative foil or contact paper. You'll definitely want to cover bare cardboard because if the board gets soggy, not only will it compromise the integrity of the cake, it will impart a cardboardy taste to the cake.
cardboardy? LOL
I am glad I came across this post. I an making my sister-in-law's wedding cake next week and was just wondering about this. Would it be better to use saran wrap, foil, or even wax or parchment paper? Or is it personal preference? TIA
Ditto to bakersdawn I am making a wedding cake for my brother-in-law's wedding and will be doing the cakes tomorrow. I wasn't planning or even thinking about covering the cardboard. I am sure glad I saw this!
Thank you to everyone for such good advice!
