OK, I read on the "Secret" thread the other day about cleaning tips fully submersed in water, with a little dish washing soap, in the microwave for a few seconds.
Can you also do this with Couplers, or even the bowl you mix your icing in ( as long as it's not metal)?
Thanks!
If you boil the plastic couplers along with the metal tips, I suppose it would be possible that the tips could get hot enough to damage the couplers, but I've never heard anybody say that had happened to them.
I just soak my bowls and wash the icing out good and then put them in the dishwasher (so the DW doesn't get all gunked up with the grease from the icing.) Janice
I don't know if you should put the plastic couplers in the microwave to clean. I really would be worried about the plastic becoming mis-shapen. I do put them in the dishwasher in the utensil holder and close the snap-fit lid so they don't escape. They're nice and clean and retain the proper shape. The water is certainly hot, so maybe you could try one and take a look at it. It might work ok. Let us know if you do try it, and what the results are.
That sounds a little scary to me. I put all of my tips and couplers in the dishwasher (you know the little cage that can be closed where you put your forks and spoons). I sometimes forget to close the gate and then I am on my hands and knees feeling around the drain in the bottom of the dishwasher. Anyone done that? Come on fess up!
I use the microwave method ALL the time. I put my couplers and tips both in a microwave save bowl cover completely with water and add a few drops of liquid dish soap. Leave room in the top of your container for bubbles. Microwave for 30 seconds or so. The tips do get very hot but I have never had mis-shaped couplers. I do use my finger to push most of the icing out of the tip before using this method.
I submerge them in hot water and use a toothpick to get the excess icing out, then put them in the dishwasher.
Before I wash my bowls, I wipe them out with paper towels. I'm afraid after time, my drains might clogue up from all the grease being washed down. It doesn't take much time to wipe them out into the trash and washing is a snap, because the excess grease is gone.
Welll...I must be the only one who actually washes them by hand! I just started taking cake decorating classes this summer, so I was a liitle naive. It says the tips won't rust. WRONG!! I left mine soaking um, a couple days or so (I'm a very busy mom & grandma with 2 jobs!) and some of them were a little rusty! My instructor says that won't hurt anything, but I think it looks awful. It's highly likely that I'd not get back to them in the dishwasher for a day or two as well. Thus the reason I wash mine immediately by hand ![]()
I always do my tips and couplers in the microwave in a microwave safe dish for about a minute. Never had a problem.
O thank goodness someone to back me up! I was begining to think everyone was gonna think I was crazy! ![]()

Your not alone, I do this all the time--tips and couplers together! They are hottest a dickens when they come out, so I let them cool over night, and wash them good the next morning. This was one of the best secrets I found on CC...keep up the good ideas!
I clean the tips and couplers in the microwave all the time now. No problems at all. Super clean. They are really hot for sure when they come out so just be careful not to burn yourself. I set the timer for 3 minutes which is not long enough to boil the water but long enough to clean everything just great. Much faster than handwashing and never a drop of grease on them.
Give it a try!
