I am making my sister-in-law's wedding cake and she really likes the look of this one attached. I am doing something similar, with some modifications.

My question is on the bottom layer, I am assuming the gold stripes are painted on using luster dust or something similar onto strips of fondant. How on earth can I get the gold stripes so perfect? I have a very unsteady hand and free-handing will not work well for me. Any suggestions?

What about using a thin gold ribbon? All the Christmas craft supplies are coming out. I'm sure there'll be gold ribbon out there.

I am sure there will be better suggestions but the first thing that came to my mind is a projector. Then your just tracing over the shadows.

If you use a sugarcraft gun or clay gun you can extrude strips of fondant which you can then paint. To help you position the strips you can use a set square or triangle to make sure your strips are positioned straight.

I think gold ribbon as well. Ive seen decorators "tape off" cakes for painting but I don't know what kind of tape they used

This doesn't look like real ribbon but thin stripes of fondant painted gold. Besides would would want to have to remove all of those non edible ribbon if it were real ribbon which it doesn't look like to me. A clay gun would be useful for this design.

i agree...that looks like thin strips of fondant painted gold. if that were ribbon, it would be a pain to remove because of where they are on the cake.

I bought a stencil to do stripes and plaids with and it helps to keep them straight and all the same thickness too.

Thanks for your replies. A stencil is a great idea, I think I'll go that route!
