Do you make your own birthday cakes? I had mine all planned out and then hubby announced that he will be taking care of my cake and that I am not to make one! icon_cry.gif I planned to make a purse cake so my neighbor would be able to see it since she would like one made for late December. Just curious.....

I make my own unless my husband wants to make mine and since he hates cleaning the kitchen he won't.
I refuse to let him get a grocery cake, I know lots of people like it but I really don't like the bettercreame they use.

My hubby announced to me this past weekend that he is making me my birthday cake. icon_surprised.gif I said okay, but you better make it, not buy it! He said he would make it all by himself. This I gotta see!

Maybe you can make a purse cake just for practice and invite your neighbor over for cake and coffee?

First, I am not married, been there done that. But, in my opinion, if you want to make your own birthday cake, you should be able to do just that.
Tell your husband that you really appreciate him wanting to get your cake, but that you want to make this particular cake and it really means a lot to you. I bet he will understand. Good luck.

I say it's your birthday and if you want to make your own cake, then you should. Tell him it's your birthday present to yourself.

Sorry, I'm old-school on this. I grew up with the idea that you do no work on your birthday -- including making your cake! Your husband probably looks at baking as work and wants to give you the day off. Let him have his fun doing your cake, and you can always make another one for your neighbor at another time.

Let him make you a cake. I agree that you do no work on your birthday. You should do whatever you want. So....with that said....you want to sit in your kitchen and make a purse cake for fun! Some people might look at making cakes as work, but I look at it as fun.
My birthday was last month and my husband did EVERYTHING for me all day long. He told me I could do whatever I wanted for my birthday. So I went to Michael's for about an hour and spent $60 on new cake supplies, came home and played in the kitchen for a few hours. No interruptions from the 5 month old cuz daddy took the day off to take care of me and her!
So tell him to bake away and then move over cuz you are playing in the kitchen too! icon_biggrin.gif

Good Luck and Happy Birthday icon_smile.gif

I think it's nice that he would make your cake for you! I really want to make my bridal shower cake but my bridesmaids won't tell me when the shower is, it's a surprise icon_sad.gif

Make the cake. It can be a day after your Birthday cake. Or the next day. But, I would let Hubby get a Birthday Cake for you. I'll bet he thinks he's saving you a lot of work.

I say if your hubby wants to do something special like that and bake you a cake...let him. You could always try the purse cake another day. That's my 2 cents.

exactly. In my house...we have a BIRTHDAY WEEK! lol

You can ALWAYS make cake, your hubby making cake? A once a year event.

Let him have his fun, don't discourage him..you may need him to step in as a back up one day!

Having Hubby make your cake is wonderfully romantic and thoughful................if he is going to do the clean up! My honey is a romantic and when we first got together he would make me breakfast in bed. He made everything, tiny fried potatoes I love, cheese omlet w/fresh made pico de gallo, toast, fresh squeezed orange juice, fresh pot of coffee. It was so sweet it brought a tear to my eye but lordy nothing compared to the tears I shed or near heart attack I had when I finally got out of bed and saw the kitchen. He used just about every pan in the house, the counters and table were full of dirty bowls and dishes, not to mention potato peelings, egg shells and what not in the sink! After the initial shock I laughed so hard and told him I love you dearly and this is the nicest thing any one has every done for me but PROMISE me you'll never do it again. So make sure you have a clean up clause!!!!

After thinking about it for a while I don't want to hurt his feelings so I will let him. It should be interesting since he doesn't go beyond mac and cheese from a box and frozen pizza. He said it will be special so OK I give! icon_wink.gif

My Dh is letting me make my own. His gift to me is he will buy any tools to do so. YAY.
I say go ahead and make your cake (a gift to yourself) maybe not "on" your day but that week or so. That way his feeling aren't hurt.

Have a great birthday!!!! icon_biggrin.gif

I had my b-day cake all planned out too when my husband said that he really wanted to do something for me and bake me a cake. I thought it was really sweet of him. He came in and out of the kitchen with a few questions but did it all by himself. We ate that cake at home on my actual birthday, then I made the cake that I had planned when my family got together for my birthday. Ultimately, it's whatever you want on your b-day, but it is sweet of your DH to offer!

I would love for my DH to make my bday cake. I would actually sit in the kitchen and watch him, wouldnt that be fun!?! My DH is sweet though for my birthday a few weeks back my present from him was a day at the spa on my birthday and the day after he watched the kids so i could make my 1st halloween cake. I had a birthday weekend but it would sure be nice to have a birthday week, maybe when i'm 60. icon_smile.gif. Anyway the whole point of my rambling is let him make the cake and like others said do your purse cake another day or do it anyway. Whatever you want, its your bday.

My hubby has always made my bday cake! Now, he supervises our kids while they make it. they get so much enjoyment out of it. I would never take that away from them. Plus it makes me feel great that they enjoy giving me something back for all the cakes I do for them! icon_biggrin.gif

Well my husband bought me a cake from the grocery store once. The man working scribbled some chicken scratch that resembled my name and I just smiled when i got the cake!
Also I was bought a DQ cake once and now they all know better!
But in reality I really do not eat cake on my birthday-I did get my free Applebees molten cake the day I served though!
