Everyone here swears by Americolor super red. If you don't have that, you'll probably need to use a lot of what you have. Icing colors intensifies after it rests for a while so maybe you can leave it alone for a little while then check later.

You can also use Wilton's Christmas Red, and mixed it with a touch of Orange to brighten it. If you get it too bright, mixed a touch of burgandy into it to tone it back down.

Yummy is right - the color WILL intensify. For a truer picture of the final color, I always put a small swipe of icing on a paper towel - the icing that is covered in your bowl will appear a different color than when it has had a chance to air dry.

I also read on here (can't remember where or who mentioned it!) that if you start with yellow, mix, add orange, mix and finally red and mix the color works out better. Good luck!

Thanks Everyone!!!! I have used three things of red color and it's still like a pink so I think now I'm going to try to use a little bit of orange and see what that does

Thanks Again,
stacy

P.S I really need to master this color I have two more cakes that I have to have red icon_sad.gif

If you get Americolor red, it will be red everytime without having to mix other colors in. (or pray that it works!)

That happened to me once when I did a Ladybug cake. I was freaking out because the color looked "pink".

I said, " Oh well..here goes nothin'..." And within half an hour it was red. When the BC dries and hardens, it gets darker.
I say give it a shot and let it rest..you'll see the difference =)

I think for my red on the Darth Maul cake in my photos I used at least 4 oz of Wilton No-taste red, and I know I started with orange. For the red and white wedding cake I did (that is very deep, dark red), I started with chocolate buttercream, used 3 1/2 oz of No-taste red and a packet of cherry kool-aid. That icing was soooo good. It tasted like chocolate covered cherries (very rich by itself though). It does also darken as it sits and will darken more as it is exposed to air. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Intense colors like dk blue, black and red *MUST* be mixed at least the night before using. It takes that long for the color to develop. Tomorrow when you use it (or it'a already on the cake) it will turn redicon_smile.gif
When you make red, start with a base icing color of pink, orange or yellow depending on the shade you want. If you make a bright pink base, then add your red color it will take less paste and change color faster.
Having used 3 paste pots you WILL have a bright/dark red by morning. It also probably will have a bitter tasteicon_sad.gif If it does you can add some UNsweetened KoolAid (strawberry or cherry) to give it some nice flavor & a bit of a color boost. Or use extra flavoring mixed in.
