I was making a baseball stadium cake for a friend (she was paying). She wanted a pudding filling. I made a half sheet cake and cut off about four inches. I placed the 4 inch pieces on the sides to create stands. I doweled the pieces and about 10 mins later the stands slid off. I cut the cake down and added fondant stands thinking it weighted too much. about 30 mins later it also fell. So, now very desperate, i took a 9in round out of the freezer and attempeted to put what was left of the sheet cake (now 4x4) on top of the round IT ALSO FELL!!!!

Lastly I took another 9 inch round out of my freezer and put it together. Finally I decorated and got ready to go. We got in the car and began to drive and IT FELL AGAIN!!!! icon_cry.gif

I called my friend balling because there was nothing else I could do. I SPENT 10 HOURS on this cake. I took it to her house and we tried to salvage it, no hope. They just served it as is. On the bright side they said it was delicious.

Has anyone used Jello pudding with no problem? That's the only thing I did diffrently.

Pudding for a 3D cake?! That, I would say is a definite no-no! You need something solid like buttercream to hold all those bits together. I'm really sorry for your trouble, but at least it tasted good, and that's what cakes are for at the end of the day, eating!

I would not use something slippery for a sculpted cake. Pudding was probably the culprit. So sorry that happened, but glad they loved the taste anyway!

I also think the pudding was to blame....we all live and learn! I stick with buttercream only when doing sculpted cakes! At least you had something delicious to eat!

oh wow how frusterating! I am so sorry to hear about your troubles. I would have been balling too!
I do have to agree on the pudding being the culprit. You have to be very careful about your fillings for 3d cakes, really need to make sure you are using something stable.
Oh well there is always next time, and I bet it really tasted yummy so truly that is the most important thing thumbs_up.gif

I agree--Pudding in a 3-D cake--never! Besides being slippery itself, the pudding soaks the cake quickly and destabilizes it.

Some decorators won't even put more than a crumb coat of buttercream between layers when sculpting cake---I'm one of those.
