It's a hard thing to do. Most people say buy some (already made red) and add it to the frosting you have made, or make a small amount and added it to the rest. The only time I have made it I ended up airbreushing it afer. Good luck!

tint your icing with a small dab of orange and then red. for some reason if you start with a darker color instead of white you get better results. icon_lol.gif

I've read about some people using red kool aid to do it, but I'm not sure how well it works since I've never tried it.

Try this thread. Maybe you can find an answer there. Good luck.

When I make red I start by making a really dark chocolate icing and then from there start adding red until it is the color I want. However if you want it be a bright red then be sure you don't start with to dark of a brown because then it will be more muted. Here are links to to of my cakes where I started witha chocolate base:

On this one I did not use as much cocoa powder

and this one was much less dark in person but darker thatn the other one

Not sure if you have access to it for this batch but Americolor Super Red and Super Black are (I think) the best for getting truly red and black buttercream.

My local cake decorating supply store carries them but you can also order them from various sites online. Any red or black in my photos were using them. They are GREAT!

I read a thread on CC. Add red then just a LITTLE dab of black tint, that will deepen it. Thats how I got the red for the roses on a wedding cake.

Red can be done... it just takes way more colour than you think!

I also generally start from a dark pink or orange base and add CK red or Americolour Super Red and go from there. For about 3 cups of icing, I need about 1/2 jar of the CK or 3/4 bottle of the super red.

I never even thought of starting from brown - what a great idea!!

When I've made red buttercream, I make a whole batch and use red liquid color from the supermarket (or red airbrush color) in place of the liquid called for in the buttercream recipe. Works great for me!!!
