I am quite new to CC and I absolutely love it.

I have learned so much already....but would really like to hear from the CCers in my own backyard. I live in San Jose....Willow Glen specifically.

I need to know where you get supplies.....Cakeworks and Barbara of Paulines are the only two places I know (other than Michaels of course)....and they both fall short.

If you know where to get hi-ratio shortening around here, I'd love to know that too. I have a call in to Sysco, but would love to avoid all the ordering.

Looking forward to meeting you all online!
Erin

Hi Erin,
I am in Contra Costa County, about an hour and half from you I think. We do have at least one member as I recall who is in San Jose and I can't recall her name, sorry. Hopefully she will see this thread and jump in. I have not found a decent cake decorating supply shop in my area. There are shops in Berkeley, Fremont and I believe Daly City. If you are looking for specialty items like chocolate decorations, etc. we have Marqu Foods in S. San Francisco, open to the public and no minimumu amount to order, wonderful customer service as well. And in San Leandro we have Albert Uster's, a wonderful shop but quite expensive and they have a $175.00 minimum order requirement. Other than that I do all of my shopping online.

Thank you for responding!

and thank you for all the leads.....I will certainly use them.

Do you do the hi-ratio shortening thing? I am curious- never tried. I usually do a real buttercream but wanted to test the waters with a new product.

I use Italian meringue buttercream, so no shortening.

Hi, I'm a bit north of you in Santa Rosa...we have a nice cake shop called Nancy's Fancys here. Other than that, I usually shop online as well.

Cake works is good, but Julie needs to add more to the store.

Sysco does not have a cash and carry store any more, you will need to have a business license.

You can buy hi ratio, 50lbs for $27 from bakemark in Fremont. Here is the number,

32621 Central Ave., Union City 510-487-8188

You will need to fill out a simple paperwork, you pay by cash or check and pick up is between 9am to 2pm. No business license needed.

I order a lot of my supplies from country kitchen because of the variety. I also use cakedeco.com a lot espicalley for fondant.

thank you to everyone for responding.....

Yes, I find that Cakeworks is lacking a lot....and they are so expensive!!!!!

I have a business license and a catering company so Sysco is an option still.....but it is such a pain.

I will have to try the Union City store...thanks.

Santa Rosa and Sacramento are too far, but if I am in town, I will stop by!

Shirley....my IMBC always tastes burnt......any ideas about that?

Diane...welcome.....tell me more! Where are you looking to move? why are you moving? will you do cakes here too?

I am just south a bit, down here by Monterey. I find some of the stuff I need at a local chocolate/candy store or on line. I find some at our local Michaels but not much.
