I have finally finished this cake that I have been practicing for, working on, and asking sooo many questions about. I see several places for improvement, and I want feedback before I take this cake to the shower tonight. (I kind of just placed the roses around the top two tiers because I wanted to take a picture, but I am not actually going to travel with all four tiers stacked.) I really, really want input/suggestions. I can take it, I promise!

Looks really good! The only thing I can see but can't really tell from the pic if something is just a tiny bit off on the top tier, on the right side of pic. It could be the angle of the camera though. Your eyes are right there so you'll know best. The camera always highlights things that no one else would ever really notice!

You're right about the top tier. It needs one more rose right there on that top corner. When I try to add it, I can't get it to stay and it starts to bend that stripe on the right. I can fix the bend, but how do I get the rose to stay on the corner?

Could you maybe just a pice of thin thin wire to help prop the rose in place?

very pretty cake! Are the roses from fondant?

Yes, the roses are made of fondant/gumpaste. If I put a piece of wire through hardened fondant will it crack? That would work really well if I could get the wire through the rose.

I'd think the gumpaste/MMF would probably crack, you could try making a U-shaped piece of wire to hold the rose in place. Did you try royal icing as glue? (Be sure to color the icing as close to the rose color as you can, that will make the "glue" less visable.) Good luck!

PS: The cake if BEAUTIFUL! GREAT JOB! icon_biggrin.gif

Can you try to dampen a sharp toothpick and gently work that into the rose?

O K!!! The problem rose has been attached. The toothpick idea worked really well. I tried the wire, but I couldn't get the rose to stay on the wire. Thanks everyone for the nice comments!

Your cake is lovely and they will be amazed when they see it. The only suggestions I might offer is I notice a little icing bulge on the sides between the layers. That does happen, but here is a tip that really works. Pipe a dam of buttercream icing using a #12 plain piping tip just inside the top edge of your bottom layer of cake, add the filling and place the top layer on. Now with the same piping tip pipe a line of icing all the way around the sides where the two layers come together, smooth that line of icng with a spatula and then crumb coat and ice as usual. Filling in that space between the layers eliminates the space and gives the crumb coat and final icing something to attach to.

Thanks Shirley W, I have heard about damming the icing, but I have not read it explained step by step like that. That little bulge was driving me crazy! I did pipe the line around the top of the bottom layer, but I didn't do it again once I placed the second layer on top. Well, now I know for next time! icon_biggrin.gif
